Best football program without a state title?

Prestonsburg was better on both sides of the ball - even Card fans there admitted as much. P-burg was up 12-0 with 5 minutes remaining...unfortunately, close enough a long pass and a bad snap on a punt attempt reversed the outcome.

Sometimes the better team loses. But, that's football.

and we can now watch that great title game online

For those picking Hazard, don't forget they won a championship in ClassA back in the '60s, so they don't meet the criteria.

Nevermind, I was thinking of Elkhorn City, so scratch that comment.

Louisville Western !!!

The 1999 Lawrence County Bulldogs was a football maching scoring a lot of points that year en route to a great season. One of the best mountain teams ever.

Gonna have to go with Sommerset, with Prestonsburg a close second on my list. Hard to agrue with 5 runner ups. However Prestonsburg has won its fair share without getting the Championship, 18 District Titles, 10 Regional, and 2 State Runner ups.

On a side note in the early 2000's I believe Pburg lost to the state champion in the playoffs like 5 or 6 years in a row, teams that included Boyle Co. and Belfry. And in 2002 was the only team to beat Bell Co. all year.

The 2002 Pburg team was much better than their fate may surmise. In my opinion, they were the #2 2A team in the state, they just happened to be in the same district as a great Bellfry team. If there was a 5 class system in place in 2002 I would venture to say Pburg would be the 2A champions.

Yeah I put Pburg and Rock in the same category. I know Rock has been around 38 years (something like that, the exact number is listed in this thread) and has 2 runner-ups to Nationally ranked Boyle County teams, I know they lost in the state semi's at LEAST twice, and was in a district with Bell County for years and years.

I think you mean 2003 (was true for the most part in 2004, also). Wink

2002 was all Breathitt Co. with Haddix and Co..

Better team, yes they were, but we disagree about the holding. Mayfield used speed and luck to do the inprobable

From what I have heard (and trust me I hear it all the time). They were still honestly gassed after beating one of the best teams in the country.

No slight intended toward that Card team at all. Bright and Dix were among the best in the state. Mayfield kept the score close enough and were plenty good enough to take full advantage of Prestonsburg's miscues at the end.

The biggest problem I had with the hold was...it happened well behind the play against a defender who'd let up on pursuit as the play went away from him. Of course you won't agree (understandably), but imo NO team should lose a game that important on that sort of call.
These are great.Hope it's a success for that football team.

Sad thing about JCHS is that they probably had more talent at that school year in and year out than any school in the Mountains. In the late 70's I think 1978 JCHS had a 10-1 season and produced 2 all-state players. During the 80's they were loaded with talent but for some reason the coachs just couldn't put a great team on the field. For the most part the coachs were just bad, they were teaching football of the 1940's era, even so they would show Flashs like in 1985 when JCHS beat a Paintsville team led by Joey Couch, a Tiger team that played in the Class A state Championship. I have told the Story before about a 11 second flat 100 meter guy who also High Jumped 6 feet 8 inchs, this guy was 6' feet 2" inchs tall 220 pounds and the JC Coachs played this guy at OFF Tackle. This guy was a RB back or receiver at any other school in the WORLD. What Matney has done since he has been at JCHS he has done when JC has not been loaded with bodies. He has some class coming up in the next few years are Loaded.

Any title prior to 1975, in my opinion is fictious. The playoff system didn't come into existence until then. You had conferences, and bowls but no true method to determine the state champion.

For me to call a program "best" they have to have been consistent with wins since 1975. There are programs who get hot for a five or ten years then cool down. I am not counting those.

Official playoffs began in 1959

Hopefully we can both be removed from this discussion after this year.

No one else is even close in this distinction.
