NKU students go for teeter totter record
#1
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS — Northern Kentucky University students will attempt a Guinness world record while also making their campus greener.

More than 100 teeter totters will be teetering at the same time Monday to establish a record of the most people on teeter totters at one time in a single venue. They will be doing it to raise funds to buy recycling containers for the campus.

The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. in front of Griffin Hall. If it rains, it will move to Regents Hall.

Tables hosted by various campus organizations, community organizations and vendors will be set up at 4 p.m. Ben-Gal cheerleaders will be part of the event, and music will be provided by Q102 radio. Massages will be available for $1 a minute with a portion of the proceeds going to the campus.

The first-ever Battle of the NKU Dining Chefs will also begin at 4 p.m. Four campus chefs, using a surprise bag of ingredients, will have 45 minutes to prepare their dishes in an attempt to become “Top NKU Chef.”

The teeter totters were built by students at the Charles E. McCormick Vocational School in Campbell County Schools.

McCormick construction teacher David Lawson said NKU approached him about it in January. About 25 students built them.

“I thought it would be a great project and a good learning experience for our kids,” Lawson said. “We were able to incorporate a lot of science and math into it as we went along.”

After Monday’s event, the teeter totters will be made available for use by NKU organizations for fundraising. Materials from unclaimed teeter totters will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

The event is open to the campus community. Multiple prizes will be awarded, including awards for the best decorated teeter totter and the team that raises the most money.
