STANTON — Floyd County Sheriff John K. Blackburn found himself on the other side of law enforcement in Powell County Sunday night, after being arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in a county vehicle.
Blackburn, 62, of Prestonsburg, who currently serves as president of the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association, registered a .202 on a breathalyzer — more than twice the legal limit — and was arrested in Powell County Sunday night after other motorists reported that the Chevrolet Tahoe being driven by Blackburn was “driving recklessly.”
According to officials with the Stanton Police Department, the vehicle had an “official” license plate. According to state law, vehicles can only receive “official” tags after they are certified to be owned or leased by government agencies or nonprofit ambulance services.
According to the police report, Officer P. Frazier, of Stanton Police Department, responded to the reported reckless driver. Frazier wrote in his report that he observed the vehicle cross the center line several times and at one point swerve off the road and nearly strike a guardrail.
After stopping Blackburn at 8:07 p.m., the officer reported Blackburn had slowed speech, bloodshot eyes, and smelled of alcohol.
In his report Frazier stated, “The driver insisted he had only drank water and was weaving because he was talking on his cell phone.”
Blackburn allegedly told the officer he had a medical reason for why he could not perform a field sobriety test. However, a breathalyzer was administered, and Blackburn registered a reading of .202. The legal limit in Kentucky is .080.
According to the police report, following the breathalyzer test, Blackburn admitted he was coming from a casino and had consumed alcoholic beverages that day.
Blackburn was arrested at 8:14 p.m. and was booked in the Powell County Detention Center at 9:28 p.m. He was later released on a $2,500 surety bond.
Blackburn is scheduled to appear April 9 in Powell County District Court for arraignment.

Does party matter if they are breaking the law? If he was DUI from weed or alcohol makes no difference.

On kind of a side note, with all the cell phones out there now, people better realize that it's easier to get caught doing stupid things.

I made it point that he was republican because republicans are predominately for keep marijuana illegal. If a democrat was doing the same thing, I would definitely say it. I'm for legalizing pot, and oppose anyone that wants to keep it illegal. And, if you had taken the time to notice, I didn't name that he was republican. I pasted and quoted it just like it showed up in the news feed, minus the "hypocrisy alert" part.

You ask this question after making such a big deal of the party affiliation of the NY Assemblyman who was fined $100 for marijuana possession? The answer to your question is, "No of course it should not matter." However you are the wrong person to be asking that question. Undoubtedly, the Sheriff has sent dozens of drunk drivers to jail. This is as much a case of hypocrisy as the one that you raised involving the NY Assemblyman.

If we increased our search radius to include state and local liberal Democratic politicians and started a thread every time that one of them behaved in an outrageously hypocritical way, the threads would overwhelm everything else in the forum. Liberals could do the same if there were more than two or three of you capable of doing searches and understanding the results.

I focus my attention on Washington politicians because their hypocrisy affects every American's life.

This is sad. I am not a John K. fan but this whole incident gives Floyd County a black eye. I hate it for him, his family, but most of all, us the citizens of Floyd County. I'm just glad no one was physically hurt. I guess that is one positive.

I have a bunch of friends in Floyd county that say the same thing. They don't want it to hurt Floyd county's look to the rest of the state. They love their county, and don't want a black eye.

I've lived in Floyd Co most of my life and IMO we already have 2 black eyes, a bust nose and busted lip.
