They are only playing 9 games this season and have a bye this week with 2 weeks rest going into the playoffs. I think it is a VERY smart move, but I also worry about timing being off a little going in, but I think in the 2nd or 3rd round that time off could be HUGE...any thoughts???

Meh... hard to tell.
MS will be playing an overmatched opponent in Round 1 so you basically have three straight weeks without competition to make you better before playing a solid Harlan County team.
If MS was really banged up then this obviously is a good thing as they will definitely be healthy.
If MS was not very banged up then you have to worry how the team will respond after a season that featured a pretty weak schedule as it was and having such a long layoff before stepping up in class to play a Harlan County team who absolutely destroyed the same Madison Central team that Southern barely escaped against.
Personally as a program trying to make some noise I would rather model myself with teams like Belfry, Johnson Central, Mayfield, Highlands, Bowling Green, Central, St. X, Trinity, NewCath, and Beechwood
These are all teams who have traditionally been Top 15 programs over the past decade and all who have a Non-District Game in Week 10 that will sharpen their skills as they head into the playoffs and a Round 1 game that should be a cakewalk for them.

For the coaches...good.
for the players.....it sucks.
You dont get to play in a lot of high school football games. some only get to see 40 for there whole career and may not start for half of those.
I say play as many games as you can.

I agree need to play to stay sharp! If a team was only going to have 9 games I would want my bye weeks to be early in the season not at the end. IMO it gets a team out of its groove and cause them to make silly mistakes. Like false starts and off sides.
They could do like Belfry does. Take a bye the first week then play the next 10 straight or in Belfrys case the last few years and play 15 straight. Seems to work pretty good for them.

Harris has a lot of carries this year. This gives him an opportunity to heal up for the playoffs.

That's 100% correct.

It seems that playing only 9 games could give MS an unfair advantage heading into the playoffs (additional rest, reduced wear and tear on their players and reduced risk of injury) I believe that every team should be required to play a full 10 game schedule to qualify for the playoffs! Perfect example, one of Harlan County's offensive lineman got hurt last friday against Bell County and may be out for the postseason? KHSAA should have a rule requiring every team to play a certain number of total games to qualify for a playoff position IMO.....

Why just 9 games Johnson central had two pay a team from Indiana come play . Why didn't these two work out a game ?

Neersfan Wrote:They do have a rule and its 9I gotcha, thanks for the info. Then its probably something that everyone should look at and determine whats best for their program. If they can get 5 home games for the revenue and just play 4 road games, drop that last away game, be rested up for the playoffs and be more prepared for a long playoff run?

I'm with E's Army. I would assume this strategy was primarily to heal up Harris going into the playoff run. He's taken a beating in a couple of games this year.
