What a storm!! So much devastation!!
I've seen some horrible videos from the area of South London and Whitley County, and it just makes me sick. These violent storms have taken several lives and property damage that will reach well into the millions.
I also heard a report from WYMT that donations are flowing in so quickly, a lot of shelters are full and they are stock piling donations in a local church. Way to go hillbillies!!
I know we have several folks from the area, so I hope you will share your stories here. Please post video if you want.
Know that I am praying for those effected, and I am so sorry for all the devastation. Some of those films are hard to believe.

Seems like Kentucky cannot catch a break the last 1 or 3 years between the tornadoes in Mayfield and Somerset and other places that I may be forgetting about. The floods that have devastated EKY in recent years. I don't recall ever having this many natural disasters when I was living in KY.
Hope you guys get a break from all this mess from Mother Nature. Be safe and hope all affected are doing well.

I have several friends and some family living in this area. I watched this super cell on radar when it hit, and it was terrifying. Honestly, I'm surprised the death toll wasn't higher. This tornado was so violent and relenting.
I graduated high school with a woman who is involved in a wolf sanctuary in that area. She posted on Facebook that they were hit twice with funnel clouds. She's not one to exaggerate, so I believe her. She said all her "babies" were safe, but she had heavy damage in her home and on the sanctuary built on the wolf property. My grand daughter recently moved to this general area and she has two sons. It's indescribable to watch a storm bearing down on an area where people you love are living.
Prayers still going up for the ones effected; and they are many!

This supercell held together for 500 miles...crazy!!! Violent tornadoes are rare here. Made me think of the outbreak of Apr 3-4 of 1974, with numerous violent tornadoes hitting the area. These events happen here but they are very rare.

I had some stuff to do in Williamsburg. I also needed to return a rental vehicle to London. I chose to keep the rental and go to Williamsburg. Good decision , Old School.

500.1 miles. That's an incredible length in tornado alley. I wonder if it's a record in the mountains. The mountains interrupt the upflow needed to make a tornado stronger; this storm is one for the record books.

Thank you, meterologist, Granny. lol I took some meterology courses in college. Always loved the science of weather. Just fascinating. The longest-lived supercell was 808 miles back in 2006(Central and Southern Plains). That sucker stayed together for 13 freakin' hours! The longest tracked tornado in history was the one that struck Mayfield in 2021( 165.7 miles). On the ground for over 165 miles. CRAZY!!!

Luckily for Somerset, it passed mostly through businesses that were closed, farmlands, and forests. If it had touched down a couple miles further west or even just a few hundred feet further North it would have been worse. The toughest part was after the tornado came through there were two more PDS tornado warnings that came within 20 minutes of each other, which delayed rescue and recovery efforts. Also, one of the businesses that was destroyed was South Kentucky RECC, the electric co-op for most of Pulaski County, so the areas without power are going to be slow to return services.
Unfortunately, it was the opposite in London where it went straight through neighborhoods. The devastation there is difficult to comprehend. I drove through the storm’s path in Pulaski County and it really is terrifying the power that tornadoes have. I expected to see the trees knocked over but what I saw was different. They didn’t get ripped up from the ground, it looked like they had exploded, like a bomb had gone off in the area. Truly awesome and horrific and terrifying at the same time.
Prayers for the Somerset and London areas with the recovery and rebuilding efforts.

I saw the video of the tornado on the ground in Somerset. Absolutely terrifying!!
OSH, I also took some meteorology courses in and after college. That science has always fascinated me!!

From WLWT , Cincinnati :
(I know these neighborhoods; I travelled all of these roads , many times. Dad and I used to go up to the London-Corbin airport every Sunday and watch the planes take off and land. The place is devastated. I am not a religious person, but I sometimes feel a connection to the planet and our place within the universe. Sending out positive thoughts in the Universe can never be a bad thing. May not help anything, but can't be a bad thing, either. This community is in need of good thoughts.

The morning after... TOTAL DEVASTATION.

Just talked to a friend of mine. He knew a couple whose house was hit. The man said he and his wife had gone to bed and were awakened with the roof being blown off. He said his wife was literally sucked up out of the house, as if by a giant vacuum cleaner. She has yet to be found. The man clung to the wall in the bedroom as it collapsed around him and was hurled high into the air. The man was carried by the insidious vortex nearly two miles through the air. When he landed he broke both legs and his right arm, but had no scratches, otherwise. As I mentioned, his wife has yet to be found, and may never be found.
The pictures don't do justice to the devastation caused by this monster. Mobile home parks obliterated . Neighborhoods left unrecognizeable. One of the saddest things for me was seeing the poor pets, many dogs and cats walking around dazed and in shock, their homes gone, their owners missing or dead, and too scared to ask for or receive comfort. Terrible, terrible , terrible...

I lived in London for 30 years, six of my wife’s seven siblings still live there. Her older brother lost his home, he lived just a half-mile or less from the London-Corbin airport. He and his wife fortunately had a basement, rode the storm out there, but then couldn’t get out of the house, the fire department rescued them by cutting through the garage doors, it was still standing. But honestly, they feel like they were lucky, the loss of life and material devastation all around them is just unbelievable. Sunshine Hills was a large subdivision, with dozens and dozens of nice, middle-class houses. And now it just looks like it was bombed from above and everything is leveled. It’s just heart-breaking.

I have a video of Sunshine Hills but don't have enough sense to figure out how to share it.
I'm very thankful all of your siblings are okay!!! And I agree about the devastation!
Prayers continue for those effected.

Here's the monster at work , chewing up London. Does this not look eerily similar to that famous tornado scene from the Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, this was no movie production. Wicked, wicked storm...

Just sad & tragic what happened down that way. I live in Floyd Co and luckily, we were spared but still made for a lot of pacing back & forth last Friday night.
When you've got meteorologist's who have been in that business for many years saying they've never seen a stretch of weather like we've had literally since the beginning of 2025, that really puts it into perspective of how bad it's been for entire state, especially our part of the state.
January started out with a bad ice storm, plus a huge winter storm on top of that, literally took a month for everything to thaw out, soon as it does, we get devastating flooding in February the likes that this area hasn't seen in many years. Folks still recovering from that, and since then it's been severe thunderstorms, and up until Friday, deadly & violent tornadoes.
NWS officially confirmed it was an EF-4 tornado that ripped through the Somerset/London areas. I'm a few hours away from there but all this took me back to the tornado outbreak in March of 2012, that ripped through West Liberty, Salyersville, and parts of Johnson Co, which is a lot closer to home. I think it was an EF-3 that hit those areas. I drove through the Salyersville area the next day on restaurant row and it was a literal war zone, like someone just dropped a bomb on the town. One thing that stuck out the most, there is a shell station there, somehow got spared, the only thing that didn't was the letter S on the sign, so it just showed hell, and that's pretty much what it was. Then seeing pictures & videos of the destruction in London & Somerset areas, just paints a heartbreaking picture of how fierce mother nature can be.
I have a bad feeling that this may be the new norm for our areas around here, not necessarily in tornado alley, but dixie alley is what I've seen it referred to.
My thoughts & prayers go out to everyone effected by these tragedies.

I remember that outbreak in 2012. There was a local reporter from WYMT covering the damage in West Liberty. He could barely hold it together. He just looked at the camera, looking totally shocked, and said that West Liberty was just gone. Gave me chills.
One of my worst fears is having extreme weather at night. Can you imagine waking up and being in the middle of all that chaos??? And that's exactly what happened with the Somerset/London tornado. What those folks have lived through!!

Late night tornadoes are just the worst, for so many reasons.
Btw, the NWS has categorized the tornado as a F-4 . Winds in excess of 170 mph. just a wicked , insidious creature... Nearly a mile wide at one point along its death march into London.
