Alright lets hear it!! There is always talk about the perennial powerhouse teams in the mountains, and I was lucky enough to be assoiated with one. But what about the programs on the rise? Who do you feel are the top 2 programs on the rise in the mountains?
My vote is (with no bias and in no particular order
1. Shelby Valley
2. Harlan County
Help me out on this! I would like to hear what you think!!

I agree. I think the football program in Estill County is on the rise, with a very successful season last year, and a good chance to do even better this year. Also, a lot of young talent and a developing feeder system should mean success for years to come.

i'm going with Harlan County.

Bert Brown has turned things around in Perry Co.

The Harlan County Black Bears are moving up and the sky's the limit. Got three good feeder schools that should stock them with talent for years to come. Watch out the Black Bear caravan is headed to Fleming County.

You would definitely have to include Letcher Central. 4-6 in each of their 1st two years and now they have reeled off 13 victories in their last 14 games( the only loss coming at the hands of Ft. Thomas Highlands). They won a district title last year and are one of the favorites to win it again this year. The Howard's (Hillard & Ben) along with Maggard , Thomas, and the other coaches have done a remarkable job in building this program. They have put emphasis on their freshmen and JV teams as well and it is paying huge dividens. The "Cougars" will be successful for many years to come.

We've played football before in Harlan County and had football programs. What we are talking about MR. NOBODY, is an overall change for the better with High School football in our county. Although this is a new school, the football program could have stayed the same, or could have even gotten worse. Coach Larkey was such a good hire. The confidence from his staff, his players, and our community in what he is trying to accomplish has been overwhelming. So I would have to respectively disagree with you MR. NOBODY, things could have went down with the new school, but WE ARE ON THE RISE! You can feel the excitement!! I think the folks in Letcher Co. probably know more about what I'm talking about.

Knox Central is getting better and better.

Perry County and Letcher County football programs have really made a turn.

I was at the Letcher Central game when they played Harlan Co. I dont see what all the hype is about. Letcher Central should have won by three touchdowns. I be honest Randy Fraziers 94 Cumberland would have beat them by 50. Sorry mama bear your team is not loaded.

IMO LCC was helped by their move up to 5A. Instead of being in a district with Bell, Rock and Knox. They are now in with Clay, North and PCC. Pretty good trade if you ask me.
But they are still improving. When you start with nothing you have to get better!

Didn't say they were loaded, said we are on the rise. "Programs on the rise".
Don't you remember LCC's first year? If you guys didn't hire Howard, things could be different for your team today. That was my point. LCC knows about growing pains and the excitement of a new football program. I was saying, that like LCC, we are experiencing a rise in our county's football program. Thanks for the slap in our teams face there buddy.
......and if we had caught the daggum ball we may be having a different conversation.

Lewis co. will take a few year. they have 60 some guy out this year, and most of them never play football before. Lewis co coach is my girlfriends brother-in-law. give them a few years....

I agree. I talked to Coach Beder last summer and he was having a hard time trying to find a style of offense to run because Beder is a passing coach but i think he settled for the option type offense because it suited his players.

I didnt mean to slap your team in the face, but the truth hurts. Lets face it Lcc should have blowed them out. The refs keep it as close as they could. Remember the opening kick off fumble, the touchdown fumble come on. They are no more masseys, Baskins and Ravises there. I dont see your team going to far in the playoffs.

NOT!!! lol.
ER will be fine, give Allen time. A team must have a good feeder system to continue to be competetive year in and year out. For a long time, ER did not have a coach that really knew what it took to be great or even a winner....Allen played under Mike Holcomb at Breathitt Co. (3 state titles) and played at Pikeville College during the select years when they were ranked in the top 10-15 in the nation on a consistent basis and made the playoffs. He knows what it takes to win and will, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

Well............we'll just have to see how the season plays out. I hope Letcher doesn't lose a game the rest of the seaon. I rather enjoyed my visit over to Letcher Co., BUT I guess there's one in every crowd!:howdy: Best of luck to your team!

I think Allen Central Definitly fits in this catagory. There 2-0 soon to be 3-0 and are rated 23 in th class A power ratings.

Very Possible to be 3-0. But i really think that is disrespectful to go ahead and say soon to be 3-0.The game isnt even played yet, its ok to say that when Allen Central would be up 3 to 4 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter but not before the game played.
