So Far This Season
#1
It seems to me that a lot of teams are either better than expected or the best teams were very overhyped. Things to be looking good for a lot of Mountain Programs. Thoughts?

I'll say I didn't expect Prestonsburg to be nearly as good as they have been thus far. They don't have much size at all. A few guys have come out for the team over the past two weeks that have a ton of size and strength, but they are still learning the ropes.

Belfry fans have told us that they're young and may start out slow and they where right. Belfry has a very intelligent fanbase when it comes to football. But the Pirates seem to be putting things together and are one of the better teams in 3A, no doubt!

Lawrence County has had it tough over the past 2-3 seasons and I felt bad for their fans during that time span, but now things are really coming together for a tradition rich football program there. They have the size to compete with just about anyone in the mountains. May be a top 10 in the mountains now.

Pikeville after one game looked alright. They still have a lot of things to correct, but if they put a complete game together they'll win their district with ease. Their not a top 10 team in the mountains, but they are just outside looking in and may make it in toward the end of the season.

Johnson Central is taking their lumps right now. They are well coached, but they graduated a lot of senior leadership off of last seasons team and should be more competitive toward seasons end. They'll learn from their losses and hopefully everyone will be healthy for their district games as they are the only ones that matter in the end anyways.

North Laurel may be the biggest surprise so far this season. The Jags have started off 3-0 and won games over some quality opponents. Their most certainly no slouch and should be able to make even more noise throughout the season.

Bell County started off rough against Alcoa, but who wouldn't? The Bobcats are no '08 Bell County, but they are still a threat to take 4A. Their backfield and defense is the real deal.

Hazard is playing about the way I expected. They are probably the best team in their region, but not much better than Pikeville IMO. They have the athletes to compete with LCA, Williamsburg, Beechwood, etc. but their defense is still suspect as they usually are early on in the season.

Clay County may be the best kept secret in the mountains. Even with the loss of Zach Lewis they are still able to run and throw the ball. IMO they'll compete with both Letcher & Whitley County for district.

Perry Central may have the most athletic player in the mountains (besides Fugate) in Jordan Amis. Kid can win a game by himself, seriously. They also have a good playmaking back (forgot his name). Should also be able to compete with Letcher, Whitley and Clay County.

Best of luck to all Mountain teams!
