Paul Laurence Dunbar Open
#1
Dunbar is open again.

what's that make 4 years in a row?
#2
this job is nothing but a coaching nightmare
#3
Any specific reason for Thomas' departure?

He was only hired on an interim basis because the job came open so late last year. I am pretty sure the job was intended to come open after the season.

This program has fell so far, so fast. PLD is the largest public school in Kentucky. The athletes are definitely there (see: Dunbar until 2006), if someone can get those kids out to play, Dunbar could really make noise in Lexington 6A.

This might be a formality. They could still be planning to re-hire Thomas.

I don't know a lot of coaches outside of Dunbar that would take this job. The administration can make it a nightmare.

It's wierd, this school played in the state finals 15 years ago.

Would agree that a school can not keep changing coaches to develop some type of program, with the turnover of number of coaches makes one think of something is going on in the adminstrative part of things...
#9
As long as the band director and the cheerleading coach are happy...
#10
Call me crazy, but I still think that this job is a diamond in the rough. Look at what Hayden has been able to do at Lafayette. You all are right, though, about the administration aspect. You show me a bad football program and Ill show you an administration that doesn't care about it (most of the time.)
#11
:lmao:good enough for them. they had a good coach in Hensley, but didn't support him, so he left. I hope the parents and administration are happy.

Hensley done a great job at East Jessamine, he should have never left there.
#13
Hasnt been the same since Mark Peach left in 02

Possibly could be 1 of the worse jobs in KY. No support and play in a relatively tough district. Dunbar is so far down it will take some major changes to get it going again.
#15
Eric Taylor would be a good hire!

I don't see how it could be that dreadful of a job. A lot of coaches would kill for the talent walking through the halls of that school and the rest of Lexington public football is in its darker days to say the least. If a coach could just get things going at the start he could potentially leave the rest of the area in the dust. Dunbar has got the best piece of the Lexington pie as far as district lines go IMO. High student population, high student diversity, good funding for a public school, if a coach would just get people to buy in they could be one of the best teams in the state.

Never Happen. The parents run the program and the administration doesn't support the coaches. The kids don't do what it takes cause the parents tell them they don't have to. They have a big sense of entitlement problem over there

I would not call you crazy, but I do dis-agree. Unlike Hayden who was blessed with great athletes when Coach Sayre stepped down. PLD just does not have the athletes available.

Who is Eric Taylor?

I know one of the Dunbar families. Their son played as a senior only this year. Previously (and this year) he was playing hockey. He is 6'5" 260 or so...though raw at the beginning of the year he filled for injuries and eventually was starting and even centered. But previous coaches did not want him...why...he played hockey also. The family has always played hockey - his older brother is the starting goalie for UK.

So previous coaches drove kids away from football by saying this like they could not play other sports or sports that had a conflict with football.

The family said that the coach this year was very good and very good with the kids. If he wanted the job it is shame he would not be given a chance for it.

They might not have the athletes that Lafayette has, but I watched Dunbar earlier in the year on an ihigh replay vs. Harlan County and they definately looked a lot better off personell wise than many teams I saw play this year (some 6A included). Granted, in Coach Thomas' defense, the coaching carousel that has taken place there the past few years can absolutely demoralize the mental state of even the best athletes.

They even looked as though their numbers were very strong. Any idea how their JV and 9th grade teams did in their Fayette County league this year.

I dont know, but I just have a feeling that this program is going to wake up and realize what they have (numbers, facilities, a great area of Lexington to pull kids from, a good mix of demographics, etc). When they do, watch out.

I just have a hard time believing that in a school with 2,200+ kids, that there isnt the same kind of talent around as there was from 96-2003? But as I've heard many times and have said before; you show me a poor football program and Ill show you a poor administration that doesn't truly give a dang about it (in most cases).

Unfortunately, that is becoming the case in many programs across the state and not just in football.
#23
Its simple....

Get the kids to play and you will win.
The talents there. You just have to market yourself and your team to the kids in a way they can understand and make them WANT to play football.
#24
The athletes are there, maybe not on the field but PLD has athletes. I just don't think the administration at Dunbar puts any emphasis on football at all. They aren't this bad in every sport.

Isnt there soccer program one of the best in the state? s well as there golf team?

RunItUpTheGut Wrote:Isnt there soccer program one of the best in the state? s well as there golf team?

Cheerleading is always tops in the country, baseball usually fields a very good team, soccer is always among the top in the state, I know a few very good b-ball players from there. It's district lines are drawn to where, at least IMO, they get some of the best athletes in Lexington as well as drawing on a predominately middle class population, which is helpful for starting a decent booster club. They have a very large and very diverse student population, as well as good facilities. Maybe I am missing something here but it would seem like they have everything they need to build a good football program, but whether it be administration or parents, they aren't getting it done.

He won state championships in Texas with the Dillon High School Panthers and the East Dillon High School Lions. I think he is currently coaching in Philadelphia.

Their marching band has won 2 of the last 3 state finals. And the cheer squad are usually ranked in the nation.

Iam4thecats Wrote:Who is Eric Taylor?

You know....Head Coach of the Dillon Panthers, East Dillon Lions, and some school in Philadelphia.

Rumor is that he is not happy with his team in Philadephia and wants to leave. His wife Tammy is not happy since she is Dean Of Admissions at the local university there, but Eric wants to come to Kentucky to coach high school football. Word is that he will be bringing in Mac McGill to run his offense, Tim Crowly to run the defense and Billy Riggins to run special teams.....should be a good hire!

Dunbar has great athletes and some of the best facilities in the entire state.
