Dayln Dawkins and James Quick each scored three touchdowns as undefeated Trinity whipped Butler 49-6 in a Class 6-A semifinal playoff game Friday night to earn another trip to the State Finals in Bowling Green next Friday.
"Number 1 (Dawkins) and number 17 (Quick) kept rolling over us,'' Butler coach Scott Carmony said after the Shamrocks stretched their two-year winning streak to 24 games. "Those two guys are players and they make them go. No. 1 is their engine.''
Trinity, 13-0 this season after beating Male 38-0 in the 2010 6-A final, will defend its 6-A title against Scott County, a 16-14 winner over Boone County in the other semifinal, at 7 p.m. (CST) next Friday at Western Kentucky University's L.T. Smith Stadium. Scott County has a 14-0 record.
A win then would give Trinity, which ranks No. 1 in Kentucky and No. 1 in several national polls, its ninth state title in the last 11 years under present coach Bob Beatty. Not to mention a good shot at ending up No. 1 nationally.
Dawkins, a junior whose father Ralph played for the University of Louisville while Howard Schnellenberger was coach, scored three times on one-yard runs. Overalll, he piled up 272 yards on 26 carries to bring his season's total to 1,748 yards and 28 TDs. Adding his performance in a 42-6 win over St. Xavier a week ago, Dawkins has rushed for 498 yards in his last two games.
Dawkins ran 17 yards to the Butler one to set up his first TD. On the first play of the second half, Dawkins ran up the middle for 35 yards, dragging a number of Butler defenders along the way. The next time Trinity got the ball Dawkins ran 66 yards to set up another one-yard TD run three plays later.
"I owe it all to my offensive line,'' he said. "They are great bunch of guys. I kept my legs moving so I could run over their tacklers. I ran hard because we have fewer games ahead of us and I want to finish the season strong.''
"Dayln is good because of those five guys up front,'' Beatty said. "But nothing Dayln does surprises me. I've never seen anybody with as many moves as he has. He just keeps on going. Obviously, he's very good.''
