Covington Holy Cross 48 - Somerset 14
#31
Also wanted to give praise to the Somerset fans, man for a 3 hour drive you brought a lot of fans. I've never seen Newport Stadium that packed.

One last thing. It was amazing seeing that field and stadium compared to the one we played at in 2005. How did they stretch the track so that the corners of the end zone weren't 5 yards of asphalt? Very solid upgrade at Newport.

In its 14th year of existence, the Holy Cross football team will play for the Class 2A state championship next week. It will be an historic trip to Bowling Green for the Indians who will challenge for their first state title after routing Somerset, 48-14 in Friday's semifinals in Newport.

Holy Cross plays unbeaten Glasgow, a 40-10 winner over Murray, in next Friday's state final at Western Kentucky University's Houchens-LT Smith Stadium.

"This is what we played the whole season for," said Holy Cross quarterback Kyle Fuller, who passed for 278 yards and ran for 83 in the Indians' biggest game in program history, so far. "It's a great feeling to win and we're looking forward to next week."

Holy Cross (11-3) beat the Briar Jumpers (9-5) with heavy doses of its talented trio of Fuller, wide receiver Eric Walker and running back Jalen Beal. On defense, the Indians received heaping helpings from Adam Kozerski, Paul Lampone and Marcel Paul, who recovered fumbles while making key stops.

"Kyle's a beast, and who do you cover? Eric Walker had a nice game and Jalen Beal is a freak when he has the ball," said Holy Cross coach Bruce Kozerski. "And I thought our defense played great."

Fuller completed 22 of 31 passes with three touchdowns, two to Walker, who caught 12 passes for 126 yards, and one to Beal, who had six receptions for 91. Beal ran nine times for 67 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns, giving him five in the game.

"I'm on top of the world. It's so big, it hasn't really sunk in yet," said Beal. "This is the greatest feeling ever because we've worked hard since the summer."

The Indians seized momentum in the third quarter when they transformed a 14-7 halftime lead into a 28-14 advantage, thanks to a perfect performance from Fuller who completed 11 of 11 passes in the quarter for 145 yards. Fuller completed his first 12 passes of the second half.

"We knew the third quarter was going to be big, and we had to get it going," said Fuller, who's had a hand in 50 touchdowns this season. "We had to come out in the second half and take control."

Somerset tied the score at 14-all with 9:41 to play in the third on a 15-yard TD pass from Alex Lange (11-of-21 for 125 yards) to Storm Wilson (five catches for 66). Lange led the Briar Jumpers with 40 rushing yards as Somerset totaled 245 compared to 467 yards for Holy Cross.

From there, the Indians scored 34 unanswered points to seal the outcome in front of a wildly celebrating crowd at jam-packed Newport Stadium. Holy Cross answered Somerset's final touchdown with a four-play, 80-yard scoring drive. The possession was helped along by a 28-yard Fuller pass to Beal. It was capped by Fuller's 41-yard bomb to Walker, who caught it in stride and streaked down the sideline for the score and a 21-14 Indians lead, following Fuller's extra-point kick.

On the ensuing drive, Adam Kozerski stopped Lange for a 2-yard loss on fourth down, returning possession to the Indians, who were back in the end zone four plays later on a 13-yard Fuller TD pass to Walker. Fuller's kick made it 28-14. Beal scored three rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one on a 28-yard run.

"We've got guys who are tough as nails and they never backed down," coach Kozerski said. "It doesn't matter who we play, we are who are are - we're nails."

The teams persevered through a sluggish first half fraught with penalties. There were 14 penalties for 111 yards in losses, seven infractions whistled against each team, and five first-half punts as the Indians and Briar Jumpers scratched and clawed for early momentum.

Somerset was limited to 12 rushing yards before the break. The Briar Jumpers had minus-40 yards in rushing losses, while totaling 85 first-half yards. Holy Cross totaled 191 yards before intermission, 71 of that on the ground. Lange was the prime first-half weapon for Somerset with 55 passing yards and 24 rushing.

There were 28 penalties in the game, 15 against Somerset for a total of 135 yards in losses. The Briar Jumpers had four turnovers.

"Matching them physically was the key for us," coach Kozerski said. "We didn't back down from anything."

First off, Congrats to the Somerset seniors and the rest of the team on a great season. It was a blast watching you all and I'm still in a grieving period trying to come to terms with the fact that we wont see you guys in jerseys again.

HC had a good offensive game plan and completely took the defense out of their game. The QB and receivers just picked the defense apart in the second half. Pretty hard to keep offensive momentum going when their HC was scoring on every drive. Speaking of momentum, that is absolutely ridiculous for a several-minute clock operating malfunction to occur in a final four game when one team is finishing up a long drive and within the 5, causing everything to stall. Clearly it didn't cost the game but it sure didn't help.

Crossback Wrote:Great game first half by both teams. Second half was all HC. Somerset has a good team that would be better if they worried as much about making a pkay as they do trying to hit hard and try to hurt the other team. The second hakf they switched from pkaying their game to trying to hurt our players so we could not play ours, that is why they lost. Keep your focus on the game and you could have kept it closer.

I second Roshambo's response to that asinine statement, with the addition that maybe HC fans should learn to win a little better. I know they are not used to winning but that is no excuse to act like trash. Half of the Somerset fans were having to get up and leave their seats because of the personal attacks coming from the HC fans.

Well I was on the field it that is what it was. When you get a chance to watch the film let me know what you call it. I didnt pay attention to the players numbers but explain a few of the after the play reactions to. Lets see, a ove that would make Stardust proud in the ring but not on the field, an attempt at a figure for leg lock on the HC QB. Oh in you eyes it was him trying to help him up. Cut, high low on our lineman towards the end of the game. The flying body smash on our LB 3 seconds after the wistle. Then add some of the parents on the sidelines threatening the HC players on the field. That my friend is asinine.
Like I said play the game and it may have been a lot closer.

I believe that I speak for all Somerset fans when I say that we loved every second of watching our team grow into the team that they were this season.

To all our Seniors, it gets better than it feels today. You played hard and deserved a win it just wasn't there last night. It is hard to imagine never seeing each of you in a jersey again. Keep your heads up and be proud of what you accomplished. Everyone is so proud to see how well you all did and how fun you were to watch.

The all the Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen. You will back here next year! Losing is never a good feeling but it doesn't have to be that way again.

We all hate that this season had to end like this - I don't think that anyone saw it coming. Glad to see how many fans made the drive, I have no doubt that every kid play on the field appreciated seeing everyone there to support them.

On a bit of reflection on the game, it was a huge disappointment to see the game happen like it did. I agree with everyone that even though some "issues" during the game did not CHANGE how the game ended, I know that it had a huge impact when it mattered. No one can deny that the clock stopping the play of the game for 5 minutes while Somerset was in the red zone didn't kill their momentum when it could have mattered most. On top of that, the officiating was not great. I don't think anyone has any doubt that when Lange fumbled under the 20 yard line that he landed on the ball. It should have been a Somerset call. I'm not going to blame the game on anything but getting outsmarted in the second half BUT certain situations like that throughout the game did nothing but to ruin any Somerset momentum.

I am and will always been against stadium seating that pits the two fans next to one another. It was impossible to be a Somerset fan last night and be happy for our players when we did something good. The sneers and hollers from the Holy Cross fans every time we caught a ball was unbearable. Sorry that we were happy to see our team make a good play every now and then. We should have known better than to cheer for our kids.

I wish the best of luck to Holy Cross and congratulations on a first State appearance.

More than that, I hate when a season ends for a team and especially this team who was so special in dreaming of what they could accomplish this year. Congratulations on doing so well and keep your heads up! You win some and you lose some but you will always be a Somerset Briar Jumper!

The is what it is... it's over for the jumpers. I am very proud of our guys. As for the game..... I have never been to a more unorganized semi-state football game. The officials running the board were an embarrassment. I mean seriously. The clock was wrong most of the night and the score would jump all over the place. I agree you need to have a how to run the scoreboard night and anyone that is going to touch that board needs to attend.

This is the semis and I feel this was an awful place for the game. What happened to neutral sites? Does Ky not have neutral sites for semis? To me a neutral site would be meeting half way etc....

It was sad to see fans have to get up and move because of things being sad to them during the game. It was a great win for your team and you deserve to be happy but do it with class. Before any one gets upset that is not directed to all of your fans. I really enjoyed talking with them as we stood in line for 15 mins for the bathroom. Wink

I think what finally did it for me was the fact that HC families were being allowed on the field with their boys and when the somerset parents tried to go to our boys we were told we were not allowed on the field. It was an agreement with Newport so we wouldn't mess up their field. If I would of had hc colors on I would of gotten on the field. I just wish I would of been smart enough to take a picture to prove what I am saying.

Its over... I wish you lots of luck next week and have a safe journey.

What are you talking about Neutral site - It was played at Newport High School!

I think what was meant by "Neutral Site" was that it was basically a home game for Holy Cross. I'm not arguing whether or not these games should be played on a neutral site because I just am not. What I will say is that this was definitely NOT a neutral site (nor was it suppose to be one or suppose to be considered one).

I would not pick apart their comment of not calling this a neutral site just because it was played at Newport and not a Holy Cross field (that they do not have). It was treated like a home game for HC, as they had the rights to make it that way. Just because it was played at Newport did NOT make it "neutral". If it were neutral then Somerset would have been allowed to have announcers for Somerset TD's, Somerset would have been allowed to play music after TD's, and SOMERSET fans WOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED ON THE FIELD AFTER THE GAME. Only a few fans made it out to the field and I don't think any one can question that the Somerset boys needed and wanted their family out there just as much or more than the Holy Cross fans. A loss is a loss but it was somewhat tacky that parent were not allowed to give their kids a hug after the game.

Considering I had a group of drunk college kids who were HC fans in front of me apologize to me for the way some of your fans were acting and talking to us in the stands during and after the game, I might have just left that part out.

Things got chippy, no one got hurt, it's over. Act like you have been there before and move on. Enjoy your win and stop crying foul over stuff that doesn't matter anymore.

Simply telling you that things were happening both ways my friend. I was embarrassed for both sides.

Agreed, let's put it behind us and move forward.

Neutral site is not ten miles down the road. Here is an example. Guthrie OK is playing McAlester Ok for semis. The distance between schools is 155 miles. They are playing in Sapulpa Ok. McAlester to Sapulpa is 84 miles and Guthrie to Sapulpa is 77 miles.... Which makes it a neutral site.
