Pikeville will be a solid 1A team next year.

Without a doubt I feel they will be a Top 5 team and the most likely contender to challenge Hazard in the East.

Losing Randy Maynard will be tough to overcome, but having a guy like Chase Hall certainly softens that blow.

I'll go more in depth at some point in the off season, when some things are answered, like who is coming out, any transfers in or out, the usual stuff. The big loss is definitely Randy Maynard and a couple of linemen. Pikeville will return and gain a lot of weapons. If you follow Pikeville closely, this will be a bridge year. 2012 could be an average year if some holes are not filled. But 2013-2016 has the potential to be very special if all the pieces stay in place. 2013 and 2015 are looking like the best shots to get back to a state title game.

Maynards loss will be big but, everyone can be replaced but time will be needed. RB and WR as solid in the Estep and Hall kid. Im sure they will have a few lineman back and have lost some but Pikeville is Pikeville and always will be. Pikeville lost some quality players from this team but no reason for them to sweat as they have showed in the downs years there still head and shoulders better than some.

Pikeville is always going to be tough. I'd like to point out, with Swain, NC winning their 1AA title yesterday, 2 of PHS's 3 losses were to state champs, and the 3rd loss was to a state runner up (Belfry by 1 point to a very talented Central team). I agree with PT above, 2013 and 2015 are looking like potentially exciting seasons. They have a good core coming up from junior high, and the 4/5/6th graders have some excellent skill players whom I'm hoping stick with it. I think we are very possibly looking at another long run like we saw begin in the mid 80's.

Panthers special teams unit will def. be a plus in 2012,IMO. Especially in one Chase Hall and Cody Estep. These two were very impressive through the season on kick off returns and in particular during the Hazard game.

Sure hope this is possible. Anything close to those yrs. would certainly be sweet.

I'm not predicting 3 state champs like then, but certainly the potential for one or two, and definitely more years like this one, hopefully with better results in state semis. The biggest thing I'm noticing, is that a lot of them are 3 way players (baseball, basketball, football, or a combination of whatever), like back then. Excellent all around athletes, very few are sticking with just one sport. I know a lot of people say specialization is the way to go, etc., but I feel differently and think other sports are a great way to "cross train", so to speak.

2012 will be a rough year with the majority of games on the road but playoffs will be a good run but may not b as exciting as this year but the team will build on this year and 2012 season. on the years to come is another story effort in the weight room will be the desider in whether or not the potintial is used for the jr high players coming up. the future is exciting tho and look forward to follow them.

This season might very well be a bridge year. Coach Macs team will be awfully young. But they will be talented. The majority of our games will be on the road next season during the regular season. But, if we win our district, and I expect we will, then the only time we go on the road during playoff time is to Bowling Green if we make it that far...I believe Coach Mac and Staff will have these boys playing well come playoff time next year and if the holes are filled it could be a continuation of last year and MAYBE MORE! Time will tell....But either way...GO PANTHERS!!!

Very, very good points. Made me realize that it would be our luck that, IMO, our best years just looking ahead will be 2013 and 2015, both odd years that would require going on the road for Region and Semi-State. Can we catch a break? lol

That break could come by way of Hazard losing 11 senior's,including,Comb's and Blanton with several linemen and they only return 6 senior's and 9 junior's. They will still be a tough out because of coaching but they won't be as strong. IMO

With Williamsburg bringing back their talented corp of freshmen they could be a tough out and Harlan returning 14 senior's and 8 junior's(including Williams,Saragas,Overbey,Allen,Logan,Moriss and Boggs,( if they can stay healthy) and losing only 3 senior's,this season could be very interesting. With Fairview and Raceland in the playoff picture, the east has several teams that could emerge as the team to face off against the west champion. I've been waiting for the 2012 season for the last 2 years.

It will be a bridge year - on paper. Like Panther Thunder said, there are some unknowns that have to be cleared over time to truly know what to expect. But here are two factors that will have a HUGE impact next year: the leadership of this year's seniors. Yes, they've played their last game, but the "never say die" attitude wore off on the younger players through the season. Did it stick? We'll find out. Also, Estep and Hall have been mentioned as returning talent, but do not forget Austin Black! Only a sophomore, but he was the leading tackler on this year's team. Look for leadership similar to what Tolliver Hefner provided this year on the defensive side. QB will be a question mark as will some line play, but you can feel the momentum that was built with this year's team.

The Panther's for sure have a great foundation to build apon and with the caliber of returning talent and the die hard attitude, that everyone in the east was wittness too,it is entirely possible that this team could make a return trip to the semi's. A key element for the Panther's will be if there is a solid leader and playmaker, like Maynard was,to emerge. If that player emerge's and with a bounce of the ball in their direction they could make it to Bowlingreen. I think the talent level in the east is going to be crazy this next year. Anything is possible from several teams. One thing is for sure and that is there is going to be some good football played in the mountains from the 1A side of things. I also think that it is going to be hot right out of the box next season because the Panther's,I think, make the trip across the mountain to play the Dragons in the first or second game of the season.

You mentioned Austin Black. How could i forget his talent? This kid was not only good at lb, but seemed to be flying to the ball on every play with tons of heart and soul!!

Two good seasoned linemen that will be valuable in 2012 are juniors, Cage Morrison and Caleb Campoy. These two have played on the line since their freshmen yr. Look for Cage to be a monster on both sides of the ball. Look for Caleb to get more mature and stronger in the weight room.

Very good point. But also dont forget Nathan Guittierez who was lost to a knee injury early in the season. If he can heal up ok and keep getting stronger he will further solidify our line along with Caleb and Gage. If it were me Id go with either Campoy or "Gute" at center (leaning more towards Campoy). What do you think?

Schedule will be the same as last year to my knowledge. With the exception of the Pike County Bowl.

Region for Pikeville will be away next year and the semis would be at home. The only way possible to have both at home is for an upset in the district and the semi host to be a higher seed.
I'm interested in seeing who steps up to replace Maynard. From what I saw of him this past year he was a playmaker. That's what makes 1A so tough, you have to have players step up every year. A lot of things have to go the right way to contend year in and year out.
Another thing is the middle school program seemed to be incredible this past year. I watched them play 1 time, but those kids looked huge and could play.

As a follow up to that point on the Middle School this year, they played Belfry three times - including two on Belfry's home field - and did not give up one point in those three games!

Region and Semis Home are always the same, aren't they?

Even Year, Even District hosts Region. Even Year, Even Region hosts Semis. Since Pikeville is District 8, Region IV, they will always be on the road in odd years and at home in even years. A team like Raceland D7, R4 could host Region in odd years and go on the road in for the semis and vice versa.

Region was away this year. It will be @ Pikeville next year...

You may be right. I was thinking the only way you could play at home all through the playoffs was an upset in the district on non-semi host side. I also thought the region and semi switched every year. When I have more time I'll find out for sure.

Imo, Caleb Campoy could play about anywhere on the line with the experience he has, not to mention the heart and tenacity thrown in there. I would think he would be more effective by adding more bulk and muscle in the weight room in the off season. Don't know that much about Nathan Guittierez's experience with the line. Last time i saw him play was in the P.C.B. Hope both players as well as the whole team do great in the off season and next yr.

I might be tempted to try Campoy at Linebacker, filling Hefner's spot.
