Teenagers are too immature to drink alcohol responsibly (they do now, but making it legal to buy would make it so easy and so much more common).
Too many accidents like what happened to me would happen (friend hit a tree, gave me a traumatic brain injury, I was pronounced brain dead, etc etc).
Nobody mentioned the medical part of it- your brain's not fully developed at 18 (or at 21, really, but it's closer), and alcohol kills brain cells, so you'd be killing them before you would even grow enough to have a resonably properly functioning brain.
Kids at 18 would drink all the time just to get drunk, as opposed to a lot of people of legal age who just casually do it to relax and hang out.

If you can serve this country at 18 I think you should be able to eat at 18.

I believe it should be 18. We can look at other countries to see the result of lower drinking ages than 21 years old, and they are nothing like what's been mentioned in this thread.
Of course, before I was 18 I was pissed that I had spent a year in Afghan but I couldn't buy a beer. But, looking back, it wasn't really a problem. We got it anytime we wanted, easily.
I think it should be 18 for everyone. Or at least beer and wine at 18, 21 for liquor.

If you can vote on alcohol sales at 18, go to the military at 18, you should be able to drink at 18. This goes back to what I am dead against, legislating morality.

The funny thing is that when the U.S. legalizes marijuana, and they will eventually, the legal age for that will probably be 18.
Personally, kids will get it anyways. Its easier now than ever. How about leaving drinking at 21, and moving up tobacco to 21.

I know. I dont really think its the times though, its just much more poularized now than it was 30 and 40 years ago because of all the media and social outlets we have today.
I dont think the numbers would be much higher, but its a problem.
I can honestly say ive never done any types of drugs, even pot, but i can see how its eassy for kids to be pressured into doing it.
Tobacco, Smoking in particular, is killing people off left and right, and its something many americans waste a lot of money on. Its not a big thing to walk down the street and pass 4 or 5 fifteen year olds smoking cigs.

Personally, I drunk much much more before I turned 21 than I do after I turned 21. I also did many more idiotic things then than I do now. I know this holds true for plenty of others out there. Keep the age limit at 21.

18 year olds are simply too stupid to drink alcohol responsibly.

Drinking alcohol is injurious to health but occasionally it is accepted.. After 25years of age is the right time to taste such drinks and smoke.

A counselor at a rehab facility told me that one of the reasons the drinking age is set at 21 is because the brain of an 18 year old is still developing and alchohol affects that development. This is why alchoholics who begin during their teen years still have the mentality of a teenager when they are much older. In a way it stunts your brain growth. At least that is how I understand it. Besides, many 18 year old kids are still in High School when they turn that age. They would be buying it for all of their friends, etc... Not sure that is a good mix.

I agree with RealVille here. There should not be a restriction to drinking placed on an ADULT, which is what an 18-year-old legally is.
To be honest, if you're going to make a restriction on ADULTS, then why stop at 21? I don't think 21-year-olds are that much more mature than 18-year-olds, I remember my college years too well for that. If you're trying to ensure that people are fully mature before they can drink, just change the drinking age to something like 30.
Drinking age of 21 just makes no sense at all.

21 works for me. I do not drink, nor do I plan on picking it up at anytime. But I feel the lower the age (18) the younger the people will be that can get their hands on it. My brother turned 18 as a junior in high school. Just asking for trouble, IMO if a junior in high school could legally purchase something as mentally/physically alerting as alcoholic beverages. I am of the opinion it would cause more harm than good.

An 18 year is considered, by law, an adult, with all other rights and privileges of an adult. This should be no different. Could it be that you don't drink, is why you are so quick to deny other adults their rights?

But it is still my opinion and I realize that it doesn't mean a whole lot. Just my $0.02.
