First I will say that I rarely get on message boards to reply. I do read them probably too much. MY assistant is a very passionate coach and that s why the kids play hard for him. I do not think he was being critical of Belfry fans. I have been to Belfry and love the school and how much support the team and coaches get. What bothered my assistant coach and myself was that someone would come on a message board just to try to pee on the accomplishments of 14-18 year old men. These kids have worked from the day I arrived here to turn a 1-30 three years stretch into a 6-4 regular season in two years. I could not be more proud of this team regardless of who the wins were against. When Mr. Tackett allowed us to schedule for 2013 and 2014 seasons, my phone rang off the hook. There is a reason we are on those teams schedule as well. I realize that the one being critical is not a Belfry fan or a true fan of ANY high school team or he would let our kids just enjoy success no matter what HIS opinion of how I schedule is.
Belfry fans are among the best in the state and I have recruited from Ballard County to Pike County. Belfry is a model program for all the "little engines that could" in Eastern Kentucky. Coach Haywood is a class act and I enjoyed visiting with his coaching staff when they would visit us at Cumberlands. I consider David Jones a friend and its good to see that he is coaching there now. I am a competitor but once let him use my own coaching shoes to play against the arena team I was coaching because I believe that sportsmanship is the best lesson that football has taught me. I believe that both teams will be better by getting a chance to play this game regardless of the score. For our kids its about the opportunity that God has blessed us with and to HIM we give the glory and honor, in victory or defeat.
Thanks,

1. Do you play Hatfield this week or give him another week's rest to try and make sure he is 100%? Go Fletcher, Carr, Johnson in the backfield and use Dari to spell Carr and Johnson frequently.

2. Do you only play Warren on offense to start the game and keep him away from any unnecessary contact on defense while giving a guy like a Catron valuable minutes?

3. Do you tinker with the idea of playing Hayden Hatfield at DE? He has been great all season but really struggled last week against a big, fast, and strong JC D-line. Bentley looked pretty good up front and the DE's have been an issue all season from an experience standpoint as well as the fact A. Hatfield has been banged up for so long. Hayden hatfield's experience and tenacity would be a welcome change.

I think Jackson County will be competitive, but let's call it what it is.. JC simply doesn't seem to have the horses or athletes at this point in their growing program to overcome a team like Belfry. I dont see this being one of those "Name the Score" games where Belfry could win by 100, but I also think a running clock is likely.

Belfry has 3 key issues that continues to hamper them:
- The defense, specifically the front 7, is not playing consistently good ball whatsoever
- The skill players can't get healthy on offense, and their timing as a result continues to be a problem
- The youth on the defense continues to improve, but the more minutes they play and more snaps they see only makes them better

The LB's and DE's are trying but they continue to get abused against any team with some semblance of a good offense.

^ It is probably to late to move a kid from a position they know to one they don't. I didn't go to the game this past week, but it is hard for me to believe that anyone "looked good up front" in this past game. IMO, if they tinker at all on defense this late in the game, it should be to move Horton to nose and play Duty down at DT, with A. Hatfield playing LB alongside Stanley. Still leaves you with talented but young and slight of build DE's - and thus susceptible to a downhill power run game. But you have to play with what you got. You have to at least start to wonder if Carr should have seen some time at DE or LB.

I also doubt Haywood will go with Fletcher this week. Seems he has settled on Carr at FB if Hatfield isn't a go. He appears to be confident in Dari enough to run with Carr, Dari, JJ when Hatfield isn't in the mix.

Agree with Jc coaches. This program has played the "tougher" teams in the past and lost. How did that help build a new and winning tradition? It didn't, winning breeds tradition and gives kids motivation to come out. In this day and age kids won't stick around for 1 win season any longer. To build a house have to start with a foundation, winning especially at a place like Jc helps that. Glad to see Jc coaches taking up for their kids. Even though like Coach said, doubt it was Belfry fans who were saying anything. Class program all the way around.

sportsguru4u Wrote:Playing lower level programs will not help you build a foundation for a program to stand on. Its great to get wins but honestly you might want to ask yourself are they really getting better by playing against those teams and the answer is no. Don't try to build a foundation of false hope. It will not work.

This is such a stupid statement. You can't build a program when you lose by 50+ every game. Kids lose interest and the program regresses instead of progressing.

I saw Jackson play earlier in the season and thought they were one of the weakest teams in the area. They have rebounded nicely to pick up a few wins from some pretty questionable competition. But, you have to start somewhere to build some confidence in your program. You gain very little in getting pounded regularly by an opponent. Unlike you, I see this game as not being competitive at all. Haywood will show some class and compassion and call the dogs off quickly. Backups get some PT, injured players get some time to heal.

You can't get better playing against the little children of the poor either. It needs to be a mix of some mid level comp with a few and I say few definite winnable games. You will only get as good as the comp you play against. That is a fact. Never said play Highlands, Trinity and St X.:biglmao:

Granny Bear Wrote:We have been criticized in the past for our "weak" playing schedule. Not many realized that we travel 2 - 3 hours ONE WAY for our games, and many teams just refused to play us because of the return trip. Gradually, over our 5 year history, we have improved our scheduling AND our teams! It's a work in progress, Cross Movement and I commend you for supporting your team so passionately.

Few have the tradition rich and heritage that the Belfry teams can rightfully boast. That is certainly a goal of mine to reach with our Harlan County Black Bears team!! And, we are on our way!!

All fan bases have their morons....however, more than ridiculous predictions and insensitive remarks, I think 99% of the Belfry folks are just as passionate about their team as you and I are of ours'.

So, it's the play offs, and anything can happen!! I'm so excited!!

Good luck to both teams, and may you have an injury free post season.

Belfry by 42!!!

I could not agree with you more, thank you for dispalying such class! I hope the best for you guys in the playoffs!

I think Jackson Co is going to play with everything they have in them, I believe what will get them in the end is the stable of backs. While Johnson and Hatfield are the first names that come to mind when talking about the backfield I think that Carr is probably my favorite and it seems like he or Dari have as many big games as Johnson and Hatfield. That is how Belfry hurts you, they have 5 - 6 backs on the depth chart that could star, not just start, for 90% of the teams in the state. In order to beat them your offense has to be able to take advantage of the young defense and keep the Belfry offense off the field.

BelfryPride Wrote:There arent any Belfry fans making these crazy predictions. The only Belfry fan that made one did'nt have a blowout. Yes, I think Belfry will win but in no way I am going to imply that Jackson County will not give any effort because I know they will play at the best of their ability. Wishing Safe travels for Jackson County and their Fans.

Thank you Sir! You are a class act! I am not in anyway offended by people's predictions no matter what they are, I know we are huge underdogs, I got no issue with honesty, I was just addresing my boys who get on here and read the posts that ridicule what my boys have accomplished this year.

Belfry deserves the respect they get!!! I got much respect for Belfry and their coaching staff!!! I have seen a state semi game at Belfry before, and it was one the best atmosphere's I have been to for a football game!! Passion and Pride!!

We are hoping to get there some day at JCHS, as a coaching friend of mine always says "we will keep chopping wood until we get a wood pile," this years group has been chopping and I am proud of them for that, this team is like family to me!!

Best wishes to you my friend!!!

To Jackson County supporters and coaches in this thread, most of the outrageous comments came from people who are not Pirate fans. sportsguru4u in particular is a Pike Central fan and his comments in this thread towards JC definitely doesn't represent the Belfry fanbase.

Good luck to your team and we hope you have a safe trip to Pond Creek. Enjoy the playoffs, give it 110% and leave it all on the field. Win or Lose, it sounds to me like you are blessed with coaches who understand the game and are doing the right things to move your program forward.

I love the "keep chopping wood" analogy, I may have to borrow that for future use.

I remember your trip to CAM Stadium a couple of years ago and I was impressed with your crowd and the way the team hung in there and kept competing even though the score was a little lopsided. I met some nice folks from Jackson Co that evening and I have been a fan ever since. I think this game will be much closer than that game was in 2011.

As my head coach Russ Shearer said , we got nothing but respect for Belfry and their fans!!!

The reason I do post on here, I was part of a program where for three years "nameless" people used these sites to destroy a good friend of mine and what he was trying to build. We, like every other coach, tried not pay attention and respond, but our boys do pay attention, therefore, it demands some interaction/interface on our part when a small few try to put down and ridicule them, every coach looks at there players as if they were their own sons. I realize this did not come from Belfry fans, Belfry has a classy program and fan base!!! I am all in guy, I am intensely loyal to my fellow coaches and players, I stand by them 110 percent, I will never apologize for that, perhaps my strength can be my weakness, only God knows....LOL ...

With that said, good luck to both teams and God Bless!!!

Jackson County is a improving team, they've had a great season that they should be very proud of.

But Belfry is just going to be too much to overcome.

Belfry - 49

Jackson Co. - 14

Thank Sir, we know it does not come from Belfy fans, you guys are pure class! I appreciate your comments very much! Again, the predictions did not bother me at all, Belfry has earned the right to be heavy favorites...I was addressing comments putting down the players accomplishments, they are good kids who worked very hard this year! God bless you my friend!!

People like you are what is good about H.S. football!

We got to first believe it can be done, and create a passionate fan/community base like Belfry and all the great programs have !! God Bless you my friend!

So explain to me why teams like Phelps, Jenkins, East Ridge, Jackson Co, Magoffin County, and those kind of teams have extremely difficult districts, but never seem to improve? You're logic is irrelevant and you are ignorant.
#58
East Ridge and Magoffin Co have improved this season you must not have noticed. As far as Phelps and Jenkins goes both play in the two of the weakest districts in all of Kentucky High School football and are class 1a that is why they never get better that and they unlike schools from 3a goes to the amount of students to draw from to even field a team. :welcome:

I would just like to wish Jackson Co there fans, coaches, players not only good luck in the playoffs but in the coming years. I hope that you all become very successful on the field and off of it. Also good luck to all the teams in the playoffs. I hope and pray that everyone has a wonderful time and that not kids are injured. God Bless everyone.

East Ridge doesn't play in a district, and Magoffin (as well as Jackson) have had the privilege of getting beat down by Breathitt Co for forever. As far as your 1A comments, tell that to Fairview, or Pikeville who have more kids on their roster than Phelps or Jenkins combined. I'm just saying you got to have a winning base as a tradition in order to build a program. Thus your previous comments have no validity.
