I think Garrard County should be #1 in their district. I know Bourbon is gonna be good, but the Golden Lions have the edge.

How do you get that? Garrard lost a ton while Bourbon didn't lose any and return the states top RB

^He is a system back, but is nonetheless talented.
We'll see at the end of the year who is better.

I'm still going with Bourbon. They return too much. The only way there not #1 is if he get's hurt

I think they got it right with Bourbon at the top. Returning players plus the new coaching staff with their background = tough to handle.
And I am very happy to see how the rest of the district is ranked to start the season....although I do not think it will end that way.

Do not at this point see any far west teams going deep into the playoff hunt. Tilghman has lost a key player who quit in a tiff. His return looks doubtful. They have had to fill key holes including QB. Plenty of speed, decent size if no one is hurt.
08-05-2012, 11:03 PM
With this being even year, there is a possibility that Paducah Tilghman and Central could both have to travel Bell Co for the Region and Semi-State games...wow PT to Bell would be a haul...at least it would be on Thanksgiving weekend if they played.

^
That would be quite a drive.
It would be nice to see an even amount of teams in 3A on each side of that state to get that Bell and Corbin district out of the west.

Gotta go with....
1. Central- honestly what do they return, i havent heard much from that part of the state this offseason. What do they bring back. Talk about a wake up call if they came to log mountain from lville lol.
2. Belfry- I expect some big stars to rise to the occasion this year. Belfry could be on the carpet once again this year with IMO, only Breathitt standing in their way.
3. Bell County - I expect Bell to into the postseason with a 9-1 record with there lone loss coming to Lex Cath, and who knows if that will be a loss....Either way expect to hear some great things from guys like Polly, who will do more that his share of replacing Davenport as the main back on log mountain. Plus Bell will more than likely play at home until the state championship if they make it that far.
4. Breathitt County- Can they knock off Belfry? I think its gonna take a lot to do it, but im more interested to see how they fare against competetion without the mascot of a pirate. If they can sweep there district and win the first couple of playoff games handily they could be in Bowling Green come December.
5. Bourbon County- To be honest i dont know a lot about them, but from everything ive read, there pretty stacked. It could be a fun team to watch.

While Bourbon might be returning "everyone," just who did they beat last year that makes everyone world beaters this year?
They literally played 3 winning teams last year (Owen, Garrard & Powell) and went 1-3 (split with Powell). Have they beefed up their schedule this year because it's a recipe for another early playoff defeat if they aren't challenged along the way.

#1 Obviously until the Tyrant of 3A is dethroned, Central remains at the top.
#2-4 Belfry, Bell, and Breathitt are interchangeable right now.
Belfry, IMHO, gets the slight edge in the rankings because they were literally about 12" from being the defending State Champs. They return several very nice pieces and the road to BG has to come through Pond Creek.
Bell gets the the nod at #3 based on the fact they were the clear #2 in the State up until they ran into Central. The Bobcats lose their super-star, but return a lot of experience specifically on the lines.
Truth be told, Breathitt appears to be the most talented of the 3 on paper, but they also may have the biggest question marks as noone knows if they have the ability to replace Collins at HB. The Bobcats have probably the best player in 3A and a host of receivers to throw to. Shouse and Cox are huge additions on paper, but Shouse's pedigree is based on an under-achieving Pike Central team and Cox will be playign a different position then what people know him from. Would not surprise me at all to see Breathitt roll through their schedule and emerge as the more heralded of the 3 B's though.
#5 Ft. Campbell- They flew under the radar last year and emerged as a Semi-FInalist losing only to Central. Ft. Campbell has show the tendency in the past to explode from an "outside threat" to a "Champion" out of nowhere. I think this is the team to watch in the far Western reaches.
#6-8 Once again a cluster of interchangeable teams:
Paducah Tilghman is IMHO the best blend of talent, experience, and pedigree, especially after some key transfers from Lone Oak. Tilghman once again may be the only 3A team with the speed to match Central.
Garrard County is a team I wanted to rank higher after their gutsy Semi-Finals run. Love the direction the program is heading, think they have a great HC, and their QB Abney is severely underrated. Losing over 3000 combined rushing yards is a big blow though, one which bears watching.
Bourbon County is the wild card of 3A this year. They essentially return everyone off a surprising team from last year. The problem with Bourbon is they never could get over the hump and when the big game culminating with a disappointing 2nd Round exit. The fact remains I find it hard to rank Bourbon higher until they display they can beat a 3A team of equal or greater prestige.
#9 Corbin- Redhounds endured a re-building year last year but should be on the up-swing.
#10 Russell- With the returning experience and addition of transfers the Devils have the pedigree of a higher ranked team. Hard to ignore the inner turmoil as well as the questions about McGlones health that could play a significant impact on their season though.
Teams Right on the Cuff:
Wayne County- Tough district, solid team
Edmonson County- Went 11-0 before losing
Lewis County- Showed a shocking turn around last year.
Trigg County- Always tough

Their still tough. Hopkins is a big boy and he's hard to catch. You give him an inch of daylight and he's gone and you won't catch him

Tilghman does not have any key transfers from Lone Oak. One receiver seeking to transfer is not yet eligible and probably will not play in the opener because of the required waiting period for conditioning. Anyone else who has come over this year would not be considered "key." Looks like DJ Pearson, LB/RB who had attracted D1 interest (Miss. State, Southern Illinois, Arkansas St.) despite playing sparingly, will follow action this year from the stands. Shame.

That's great on offense but will their defense stop good teams?
Last year they gave up 41, 21, 35, and 27 in their four losses. That's 31 pts per game against the winningest teams Bourbon faced. That won't take a team far in the playoffs.

Looking back at the stats: Hopkins had great games vs. Owen and Garrard in those two losses. (339 yds and 207 yds) But he only went for 82 and 64 vs. Powell County in a close win and playoff loss. Did he wear down at the end of the season or did Powell have a great defensive scheme?

Western Hills will have a tough time competing in their district. Coach Miller does a good job he just doesn't have a lot of talent.

Belfry in the east and centeral in the west, Belfry got to musch talent for the east, Breathitt maybe a little overated but we see Centeral to much speed and playes the big boys of the city PT to Bell,Co thats a 7 to 8 hour bus ride the geographics of the KHSAA must not wanted Bell,Breathitt, and Belfry in the same region. But Belfry wins the east and centeral wins the west. Every year its the same teams usually in the state finals.
