Corbin Coach reprimands player for wearing Pink
#91
I really hate to see him go. We get so many athletes out of there because they don't want to play for him.

Should have been handled privately with an admonition and then it should be over. Of all the things a coach and a young man have to worry about in their lives - it should not be this.

The only problem with Corbin kids going to Williamsburg....is when Williamsburg is actually better than Corbin....which might be the case...

So, the coach is getting grief for enforcing a NFHS rule!!!!

Here is what the rule says about towels:

One, white, unmarked moisture-absorbing towel can be worn. Towel width is a minimum of 4 inches and maximum of 18 inches, while the length is a minimum of 12 inches and a maximum of 36 inches.

The entire Corbin Team had pink ribbon stickers on the back of their helmets. Steve Jewell was promoting breast cancer awareness as a team this way. It was known by the players that this was the way they would show their respect, and everything else must fall in line with their dress policy. It was a simple infraction of the dress policy with a small punishment. I'm ashamed that a situation like this is being put out the way it is.

I do not know anybody's family that has not been touched in some way with cancer. If most people haven't than congratulations to them.

I agree, there is no reason to kick Corbin when they are down. I hope things work out for the best for Corbin, but realistically I do not think getting rid of Steve Jewell is the answer. I think he represents that school very well. I am suprised at how many Corbin fans in the area have turned against him. This team has at least three more games and the true fans of Corbin should be focused on making it the mist positive experience for those kids. Coaching issues can be figured out later.
The rule is the rule, but I think if most people are honest they would say that they have seen coaches, and officials look the other way on this point.

I don't disagree with the point that Jewell was trying to make, however I do think he could have handled it in a much more subtle way, honestly like a lot of coaches there is nothing subtle about Steve Jewell.

The really sad part of the whole situation is that the people who have no business being involved in it are at the center of it. Some people are using it as a motive to try and remove the coach. One or two are using it to kiss the coaches *** in an effort to get closer to getting playing time for their babies. (just look at some of the social media)

I would like to think the administration would do the right thing (this time) and just sweep it under the rug, it is nothing new to them, and move on. They have swept more serious infractions under the carpet so why not support your incumbent coach who has been loyal to the school, climbing the ladder to his present position.
I also find it sad, and somewhat humorous that certain fans are jumping in to use this to tear down one program to make themselves look better, and in a left handed way trying to entice kids to move. Some might call them Corbin on training wheels, since they are trying so hard to imitate Corbin's success.

To those fans: Remember, Karma is a ......not a witch, but certainly rhyming with witch and it will jump up on you at the least opportune times.
I sense some jealousy in your post. Don't hate on Williamsburg just because they are reaping the benefits of kids who don't want to play for a certain person. If Whitley could offer more they might come out there
I know for sure it won't be Dudley Hilton cause hes happy getting to coach his son 4 more years, which he has 2 more seasons left.. Now tom greer could be a good choice, corbin is his alma mater. He is a really good Defensive coach. He wasn't that good on calling offense. he did alright taking over for dudley for his in 97-2000. Dudley returned in 2001.

I am a Williamsburg fan and I have to agree with Briar Creek Brave. I really route for all of our county's teams, and I wish nothing but the best for the Corbin football program. I am not sure why people in our county like to tear each others teams apart. It makes no since to me. Nobody is playing each other, and no team stands in the way from each other sucess.

The white uniforms were turned a very light pink. I don't think there was any less cancer in Corbin that year. If you want to help with cancer donate to the American Cancer Foundation, the Lance Armstrong Foundation or the National Lymphoma Foundation. I don't think wearing pink will help much.... And this is from a recent cancer survivor.

Congrats on beating Cancer!

A parent complaint wont be the reason he's fired.
One of the worst years in the history of high school football at Corbin high school will be....

Thanks.
If I remember correctly, I believe the news report from last night is that the Corbin administration is backing Coach Jewell on this. Also, I believe I read earlier that Corbin has already been wearing the pink ribbon sticker on their helmets?

With that being said, I see both sides to this. The KHSAA rules are pretty cut and dry and to the point. Also, a football team is 30, 40, 50, 60 players who make up 1 unit and unity and uniformity are key to this....it's not 1, 2, or 3 players standing out on their own. If you are going to do something, make sure the entire team is doing it...getting the coach's approval first.

I've got a close family member who has suffered off and on from cancer for the last 5 years and I am in 100% support of what the month of October means and I can understand why some players wear the pink to support the cause. However, there are some who are just out to wear the pink and to make themselves stand out. I know that is kind of callous to say, but it is true.

All in all, if the player broke a team rule by wearing the pink towel and the pink gloves, then he is wrong....especially is the entire team is wearing the ribbon on their helmet. On the other hand, if the reports are true to the way Coach Jewell handled the situation , then he is in the wrong as well.

wearing pink gloves in honor of breast cancer = grass drills and losing your starting spot finding out what kind of person your coach is after a 34 point beating by Bell PRICELESS
The son of breast cancer survivor, I will only say that this GREATLY disappoints me. I will leave it at that.

A little off topic here but...

I dont know of a school that doesnt have the color white assosciated in some way, you almost have to have it for away games.

But i know plenty who have implemented black jerseys when theyve never had the color black in there school colors. I know it looks good, but i just have to laugh when i see it.

Most schools have three primary colors, with one being white. Whitleys other colors are red and black. Corbins are red and silver/gray, Wburg was orange with a little dab of blue, mboro is black and yellow, and so on and so on. My point is in todays age where the way the jerseys look is a big part of the game, it helps you absoloutly none on the field.

Williamsburgs Original colors where orange black and white and in the 90's they implemented the blue because of the band uniforms ... Coach Herron has simple went back to the original.
Word on the street is John Dudley quitting football and transferring to UK to pursue his degree in medicine, and Dudley is looking to get back in High school. But I know he was at Knox Central couple weeks ago recruiting.
Reading all things brings me to the following conclusions:

1. Coaching you son: No matter how good he is you will get slammed for using him "too much" unless he walks on water. No win situation.
2. Punishing a kid for wearing pink: Bad move. Rules are important. But the game should teach something about wisdom. And it is always wise to show support for good causes.
3. Coaching in Corbin: Tough assignment. Especially now that Bell is 3A and in your District. A once powerful program may not win its district in the foreseeable future.
4. Media Coverage: Some might say this is not new worthy. I disagree. How Corbin handles this will tell the world alot about Corbin. Keep it coming.
5. Dealing with Parents: Hardest part of coaching. Always has been; always will be.

Interesting situation with no absolute right answer. Everyone will have an opinion. Reminds me of how tough the job really is. Hope it works out somehow in a way that teaches the kids something valuable.
Here is my opinion of the whole situation. I see both sides of the argument but I actually agree with Coach Jewell TO AN EXTENT.

First of all, had the kid wanted to do this, he should have mentioned it to Coach Jewell before hand. There is a dress code that every member of the team wears. It's not that Coach Jewell is trying to be an ass about it. He just wants the team to conduct themselves in a professional manner. That I fully agree with and respect.

As for the O'Neill kid, I do not know him personally but do know his family and am really good friends with his uncle (was in his wedding) who was mentioned in the article. His uncle was diagnosed with testicular cancer in his early 20's. Furthermore, the kid has had many family members with cancer as have most of us.

I don't believe for a minute that Coach Jewell is against Breast Cancer Awareness. To think that is for a lack of a better word is just plain stupid. He informed the kid of the towel before the game which has already been mentioned as being a rule violation (state not team). Austin continued to wear the gloves. Personally I see nothing wrong with the gloves but continuing to wear them did go against team policy. Whether that is fair or not, it is the fact.

The boys father is a good man. His many years as a law enforcement official is enough to back that up. You know that he is going to be strict on his son having that background. However, I do think he over reacted with going to the newspaper and television stations. If there was a problem, it should have been taken up with Coach Jewell following the practice or the next day. No need to bring all of the negative publicity.

As for the whole thing, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. As we all know, media tends to take the attention grabbing topic and run with it. In this case, and note, this is just my personal opinion, I think the issue the father had was with Coach Jewell making a scene and berating the kid in front of the whole team. The quote of "You don't care about the cause, you're just trying to stand out and look cool" would tick any parent off, especially one who's family has been touched personally by cancer. That was certainly out of line for him to say to the kid if that's how it went down. It was following a blow out loss to an arch rival so naturally a coach will be upset. When upset, we all have been guilty of lashing out. I think that may have been the case.

At the end of the day, I can vouch that Steve is a good guy. While we all question some coaching decisions, myself included, he truly cares about the boys best interest first and foremost. In a small town like Corbin where Redhound football reigns supreme over everything but family and God, that will upset people. Winning championships, whether fair or unfair is what people want. We all tend to overlook the internal affairs and focus only on the final result.

At the end of the day, both the kid, his father, and Coach Jewell all should receive some of the blame. However, this whole thing has been blown way out or proportion by the media, local residents, and us on message boards, facebook, and twitter. The whole thing could have and should have been avoided. What's done is done but the best thing to do is sweep it under the rug, let bygones be bygones and try to turn the season around. Austin played tonight against Casey County. Hopefully everyone involved can move on from here and let this not play a role in the decision.

As for Coach Jewell, as I said, he's a fine coach, good person but we all have questioned him at some point. In the end, a decision will be made either by him or the administration as to if Corbin will have a new coach in 2013. If that is the case, I can promise that this will have ZERO to do with any decision made with Steve Jewell's future.
Heard this whole mess has made the national news, was told by several people that they saw it on CNN news Friday. Don't this that anyone thought that a pink glove an towel would create a media firestorm!! Wished for everyone involved that this could have been handled a little better
I wonder if what would happen if a member of our US military decided to wear a pink sash over his uniform.

I agree with you 100%.

It would be ironic if Coach Jewell did leave Corbin after this year and ended up at say South Laurel. He is exactly the type of coach they need to get that program turned around, and my guess is that they would hire him in a minute, that is if they really want to have a competitive football program.
i think jewell should be more concerned about being dominated 34 to 0 than what one kid did
