Every all state team has people left off. I feel that on many occasions that kids that don't play for the "big time" programs usually don't get the same recognition. There are a lot of deserving kids on this team no need to diminish their accomplishments. I personally thought they AP team was to skewed to the majors.

Congratulations to all of the honorable mentions from Pikeville:
-WR Cody Estep (So)
-OL Gage Morrison (Jr)
-LB Austin Black (Jr)
-DL Caleb Campoy (Jr)
Very nice honor to be associated with the top players in the State at your position. And PHS is very proud of you as players on and off the field! Keep up the hard work and go get it next season!
EKY was represented very nicely on the list. Not much for BGR to complain about.
A big congrats to South Floyd's Weston Little on 1st-Team RB. I do not know how well it will translate to the college game, but he was a heckuva high school football player.

I didn't see Chase Hall' s name, even though it should be on there.

Very pleased to see Belfry's Tony Messer get much deserved recognition, as he was named 1st Team Defense. The article says Tony has an scholorship offer from EKU.
Congrats to Coach Phillip Haywood on his COY.

The coaches need to vote. Less than half of the head coaches submitted their ballot this season. Please encourage your coach to participate. Someone explain this to the Bluegrass Preps people. I have no complaints since three Shamrocks earned first team honors. The Courier Journal only counts the votes submitted. They do not vote in this one. Frakes only votes in the AP. The C-J has been doing this since 1917!!!!

It is part of any high school coaches job to participate in these polls/votes. It is a simple process they send you the form and self addressed envelope. It asks coaches to vote for players they have seen. It is inexcusable for them not to participate.

Congrats to Montgomery County Indians Matt Tuttle (QB) and Blake Preston (LB) on their honorable mention selections. Matt broke every passing and scoring record at the school. Blake set tackling records that will not be broken anytime soon (470 total).
Would have like to have seen Matt get some recognition as a punter.
40 punts for 1515 yards
37.9 average
long of 60
20 punts inside of the 20
Congrats to everyone named to the team.

That is a ridiculous comment. Those kids that are on that team earned their spot. For you to diminish their accomplishments by saying this team isn't worthy is low class. There are kids on the CJ team that should have been on AP team but because the media wants access to the "big time" programs their kids get all the votes. It is a shame that coaches refuse to participate. Rural schools get the shaft in these polls.

it's the paper's job to encourage coaches to vote, it's not part of any coaches job description. a coaches job is simple, to coach your team on and off the field. coaches will vote for guys from their area, because they see those guys play and have easy access to follow them. it actually takes some credibility out of it because you get all these votes, and other than count them, the journalist doesn't know what to do with them. some coaches are also extremely biased. im not a highlands fan, but leaving donovan mccoy off any of the QB spots is ridiculous.
my post earlier wasn't a complaint, but an observation. and by no means am i saying the kids on there don't deserve their spot. however, give us a stat about hunter bivin from apollo. a highly recruited lineman shouldn't be the sole reason a guy makes the team. what did the offense do behind him? how many sacks did he give up? if a paper wants to do an all state team, then they have to do some research on these guys. i work at a paper, i know the CJ has the resources and money to do that.

Pretty Solid to know that Hazard Jordan Olinger is 5th all time in the state at the wide reciever position.

Congrades to the players from Paintsville and Johnson central who made HM!!

I am not disputing any of this, but the coaches are called and asked to give stats and info. I don't fault the CJ at all.

Congratulations to Lawrence Counties AJ Cyrus 3rd team All-State as a DB and Ricky Goble running back honorable mention.

Yea I was curious about the All State selection myself. We had a kid from Gallatin County that was tenth in the state in receiving and not even an honorable mention.Must be a lot of criteria that goes into the selection.

Not the coaches job? The coaches have many jobs one of which I would think would be turning in an all state ballot.

Glad to see Josh Poe on the honorable mention linebacker list as a sophomore! Representing Magoffin County! Keep up the hard work josh!

I thought Belfry qb was Sani Warren, but they have Justin Johnson listed as a HM quarterback, boy sounds like they put a lot of research into this:biglmao:

I for one used to place a lot of value on being an all state performer. Looking at the results of the CJ and AP I no longer hold that title with such high regard. With the exception of a few players that are top D1 prospects and commits the two teams are nowhere similar. For this team to have respect they should mirror each other a little more. It is interesting that the coaches voted for District POY and the CJ yet some of the POY's didn't make a team. I am sure some are disappointed and some are shocked. Anyway just my 2 cents worth.
12-26-2012, 01:35 PM
Many would think the AP and CJ would compliment one another. Regional influence and or politics ( one in the same ) does take a front seat.
If the coaches are the driving force in the CJ polling. My question is this, how do you feel the head coaches are doing marketing the football talents of their players?
I'll start a new thread to get more indepth.

Are you telling us that Phillip Haywood the coach at Belfry sent in the wrong qb name, no i'm not buying this, Paintsville gets 4 or 5 kids as HM and Williamsburg gets none. If i was the big cheese at the CJ the head of the sports section would be on the carpet and probabily going out the backdoor.:ChairHit:

No buddy, I was telling him that the CJ calls coaches of the kids who makes first team to get stats and quotes. Read things more thoroughly next time. He said there should be some stats on the lineman. They put in there what they receive.
