You're the Coach
#1
Your team has the ball, 4th and 3 on your opponents goal line with 4:53 left in the game, the scores tied at 21. Do you go for the touchdown or kick the field goal?

Here is the information about your team, and your opponents:

About your offense...

1. Your SR RB is a stud, having rushed for 1,300 yards the previous year averaging well over 5 yards a carry. He doesn't have any super qualities in speed or tackle-breaking, although he is good at both and is a solid downhill runner.

2. Your JR QB is a solid passer with decent speed. He has decent WR's, and a 6'4 Soph. TE that has a lot of potential and can get open, but is known to drop open passes.

3. Your line is solid, but not great.

4. Your kicker isn't a superstar, but he would easily nail the field goal.

About your opponent's defense...

1. Although the D-line as a whole isn't super talented, a mammoth 6-5 320 lb. defensive tackle can wreck havoc all by himself.

2. The linebackers aren't the fastest, or strongest - but make very good reads. Same with the secondary, although a safety (who is the overall anchor of the defense) is a first-team all state candidate.

Game stats:

QB: 7/15 for 163 yards (an 89 yard pass to narrowly avoid a safety helped set your team at up at the goal line). Thrown for 2 touchdowns and 2 INTs.

RB: 22 carries for 87 yards, including a 16 yard run for the second score of the game.

The WR has 3 receptions for 101 yards, the 89 yarder of which was primarily set up by a play action pass. The corner chased him down. The TE has 2 receptions for 35 yards, and a dropped pass on the first drive of the game that would have been a for sure touchdown.

The opponent has an offense that primarily consists of passing the ball, and the QB is 11/18 for 190 yards for the game, with 2 touchdowns and 1 INT. Running the ball, they have done surprisingly decent for a weaker running offense, having 102 total yards on 27 carries between various backs.

Your have a good secondary with fast corners that make smart plays, but except for that 6'4 soph. TE that also plays DE, your line struggles to get to the ball. Against the run, your defense has normally been good except for giving up a 30 yard run for a score in the second quarter.

So, do you go for it, or do you kick the field goal?

Let's hear it BGR coaches!

Play action pass to the TE. If you miss, they're still pinned deep. Put em away.
#3
Is it on the goal line, or the 3 yard line. you've stated both

It is on the goal line, three yards needed for a score.
#5
Go for it. Right at them with my bruiser rb. If they can go 97 yards and beat me then I tip my hat to them.
#6
Go for it. Never leave the game in kickers hands
#7
Lob pass to TE corner route.
#8
Give it to the RB and go for the TD then go for a 2 point conversion.

No guts; no glory!!!
#9
Sounds almost like Williamsburg an hazard game last year with less than 2.00 minute to go.we try a FG and miss .guess who won hazard took over and ran a 80yd run hazard won.I WOULD GO FOR IT.Remember after the miss FG.The ball was place on the 20 yd line after the miss.If we go for it an fell hazard gets it on the 4yd line :HitWall: :HitWall: :HitWall: GO FOR IT
#10
Send the stud rb straight up the middle. Go for the two point conv. with the 6'4" te.
#11
Hb toss weak side. If you fail make em earn it from their own goal line. Blitz for potential safety
#12
Fake the hand off and the Quarterback runs the bootleg with the option to run it or toss it to the TE in the back of the endzone.
#13
Spread them out and go run off tackle on opp side of the big tackle.
#14
Unbalanced right (both tackles to right) tight end to the left.Play action to right and throw to wide open tight end to the left. Ball Game!!!!
#15
Kick the field goal.
#16
Confusednicker:Wimp
#17
Go to my TE with the exact same play he dropped a TD on earlier.

He was obviously open and the QB can obviously make the throw...I'll take my chances that he doesn't drop two in a row. Probability is on my side and at 6'4 he gives you more room for error

Block Down Kick Out Wrote:Go for it. Never leave the game in kickers hands

Or his foot. Go for it in a way that includes your best lineman, best blocking back, best ball carrier and best play (quick hitter with a bit of deception).
#19
Over 4 minutes left in the game you have to go for it.
#20
Go for it with:
Playaction to the strong side. Running back takes the fake and heads to the backside flat. Play is designed to go to the 2nd read(the rb) TE and WR to the Strong side, one wr to the weak side. 2nd read is the big TE if the rb is covered up.

If it dnt work. Oh well makem drive the 97 yds.

Agreed, kick the field goal get the points. Where did we start this set of downs? If we were 1st and goal from the three or less then no question I'm kicking the field goal.
#22
KICK.......It's extra point distance. Ball could be on a hash but 21-21 means he is already 3 for 3 on extra points.
#23
Wow, a lot of good replies! I will narrow this down to three choices that have been used a lot...

1. Pass to the TE
2. Have the RB plow through and get the score
3. Kick it and take the points

Why do you think your choice is the best?
#24
I chose option #2. I feel this would work as i have a solid O line. My stud rb is a solid down hill runner. My 6'4" te has been open all through the game with one dropped pass. took the chance with him for the xp.
#25
O-line apex blocking (step toward the center and push forward), give the ball to your RB and shove it down their throat. no timeout needed, just line up and go
#26
Option #2 ONLY if you go for the 2 point conversion.

Wink
#27
I would line up in the wish bone and run to the side my tight end is on behind two decent fullbacks and you should atleast gain 2 yards and if you do not get in your opponent has to go 99 yards for a touchdown and its possible the other team may have a bad snap or your defense causes a safety.
#28
Failed to mention their offense and your defense. Kick the FG.
#29
Run a heavy unbalanced goal line formation, run opposite of the big takle
#30
Goal line, heavy set, opposite of the big takle
