Real quick I want to show some love to Justin Johnson.
I know yesterday he had some issues... but Belfry doesn't get a ring without Johnson. The consensus was that he was going to take the Doctor's advice and give up football after his concussion problems but he came out to finish his career with his teammates. He had a great season and was a monster in the Bourbon game... in a season where Belfry was ravaged by injuries he was the anchor the majority of the season and was there with the big play any time Belfry needed it.
He has been a pleasure to watch and I am so happy for him that his gamble to even play football proved fruitful and he could celebrate a Championship with his fellow Seniors that he refused to give up to.

I'm fairly certain that rain, sleet, snow or hail wouldn't change the fact that Belfry was the more physical of the two football teams yesterday, today, tomorrow, next week, Christmas morning, etc.

Congrats to Belfry on winning. I think that if Wayne had to lose to a team, it would be a Phillip Haywood coached team. They showed so much class last last night.

Really? How so? You do realize that if Wayne scores before half you might be on the other side of this thing. Belfry has the ball twice there at the end of the game with a chance to ice the game and can't get a first down. I'd say the physicality was about even.

This team really improved dramatically on defense from week 10 to the state finals.
Great job by the team and coaching staff.

Both had opportunities to score, but actually Belfry blew more chances to ice the game than Wayne did IMO.
Either way, it was a defensive battle that Belfry won that battle even if it was just slightly.

I don't think that I would have ever dreamt of the all out defensive battle that this game turned out to be! Glad to see the East well represented and I am glad to see at least one State Title coming back to this side of the state! I am going to make an early New Years resolution and that is to see a game at The CAM next season! Gonna have to meet up with Granny Bear and take a field trip over there!

Congrats to Belfry on winning the 3A state championship.
I watched this game and have since re-watched this game, because after reading most of this thread I felt like I had missed the game that most talked about on here.
Belfry's defense while very good, they did not stop Wayne. Wayne stopped Wayne. Guffey's passes were on the mark and his receivers dropped 10-12 passes that hit them in the numbers. Defense does not cause dropped passes. They may break up a pass with a hit, but defense has nothing to do with dropped passes. We can say whatever we want, however if it was simply cold and not wet who knows what would have happened with those passes, but no need to get into the what if game.
Belfry had some opportunities to move the ball and did at time, however, when Wayne needed a stop they got it done.
My point is simply this, if these two teams played 10 times Wayne would win 5 Belfry would win 5. Two evenly matched teams.
But don't tell me how Belfry's D was the difference, I'm not buying it.

Great defensive game. A true state championship game. Both teams made mistakes but pirates outlasted. Congrats belfry.
Cardinal nation is hungrier now. Back to off season program and reload. I would love to see a series of belfry/wc championships.

Holding a team to ZERO points and 200 yards is a great defensive effort...Guffey is indeed a great player, but he was not great at all yesterday...He did not have the greatest help, as you pointed out from his receivers, but he was way off target on some of his throws. He literally threw the ball right into the Belfry defenders hands 4 times at least and Belfry picked off two and dropped the others. On the dropped TD at the end of the first half, Guffey needed to not wait to throw the ball...his receiver should have caught the ball no doubt but the ball was thrown with a "dart" motion and caused the receiver to have to bend a little bit to catch it. Also Guffey needed to change his ball flight... But can't imagine throwing in those conditions....Great Wayne team just not good enough yesterday.

First of all, Congratulations to Belfry for winning the 3A Championship. I thought Bourbon County would beat Belfry because of Bourbon's team speed but Belfry's team grit, coaching & playoff experience and tougher schedule made a big difference. It very well could be Belfry and Wayne County in next year's Title game. If Wayne County stays in 3A and gets that far plus Central goes to Wayne County and with Bourbon County going to Belfry, it looks as though It very well could be Belfry and Wayne County. I know Belfry has a great program and always seems to reload thru hard work. How many starters does Belfry lose from this year"s team?

Definitely agree with this assessment. Not only did Belfry shoot themselves in the foot offensively on a couple of occasions.........The defense missed on a potential pick 6 in the first quarter on a dropped/missed interception. Belfry missed on some opportunities to open the game up a bit.
However, I will say this....the wayne co defense...IMO, was much more impressive than their offense. They played extremely well...and were very disciplined.
Offensively....teams HAVE TO ESTABLISH THE RUN to put Belfry between the crosshairs. Haywood and staff have seen so many different versions of the spread....they really know how to defend it.....unless the opponent challenges with a STRONG run game.

Wayne won't move up (if they do until 2015). Someone said on here that would be tough for the cardinals. Can't see how it could be any more difficult than what we have to do now to compete: bell, Corbin in district. Central in region and pt, fort Campbell and Monroe just to meet belfry in finals. Got to be one of the toughest roads.

I think the receivers are taking a little heat unfairly. The pass before the half was an extremely difficult catch to make that ball was thrown low and a big guy like #9 is going to have trouble going down for it especially in the rain. A lot of the "drops" we're not perfect balls in part because Hatfield and Horton really got a lot of penetration.
I hope #70 and #20 are okay. I know 20 stayed in the game but he really took a hit and I felt like he wasn't okay. #70 you could tell was really crushed to be hurt, and tried to get up. Wayne left it all on the field. Say what you will about rain (we fumbled a few times in it too, and it affected what would have been a TD pass to Keaton) but at end of the day Belfry is the best team in 3A. If you disagree, we have the trophy to prove it. That defense that locked Wayne down remains largely in tact in 2014.
Sani Warren exemplifies leadership. Despite bad experiences the last two years he was never phased and always poised. Would have thrown an easy TD pass late, and I think it slipped, he turned to his coach and said "my bad" and went on playing. He was never rattled, or nervous. That's why he woke up today a state champion. As I told my friends, every kid over the course of their career makes mistakes. Bad reads, fumbles, etc. Sani is no exception. He has never been the perfect QB. But he has been a humble leader who has worked his ass off for four years and deserves every bit of praise he will receive for leading this team as a passer and runner to this state championship. Hopefully his leadership has rubbed off on some younger kids because you need kids like Sani to win. I hope someone has video of him dropping to his knees after the win.

One more thing... Had Woolum been a year older we may be back to back state champs. The same kid who hits the 30 yard field goal as part of the "half time contest" in 2012, hits a 35 yard game winner in 2013. He's 2-2 on that field!

I can't believe what I have been reading from some posters. BELFRY'S DEFENSE was the difference maker in this game. No matter the weather the team that Wayne Co. was should have been able to do something, but didn't. Why? Because of Belfrys Defense. This was a defensive slug fest by both teams. You could say Wayne even stopped belfry to an extent. They stopped them from getting in the endzone but Belfrys offense was good enough to sustain drives and then get WOOLUM close enough for the game winning FG. Wayne fans can say what if this and that but so can we belfry fans. So let it go Belfry is the 3a state champs. And for this year that cannot be changed.

Looks like the other teams fans are the ones talking and it looks like the rest of the state just dont like the smartass belfry fans. just a observation from another mountain fan.

One more thing. I posted what I said about the rain, sleet, snow or hail in part because of all the weather excuses being made by fans who wanted the Cards to win. I don't like the excuse BS and when it's brought up it ALWAYS looks like crying...because it is.
But let's talk about that one TD Wayne should have gotten in the first half. Do you not remember the 3rd and long the Cards converted in which the ball hit the ground about 2 feet in front of the Cards receiver and all 4 refs totally blew the call by calling it a completion? Had the correct call been made Wayne more then likely would have punted and who knows what transpires after that, but the point is to give credit where credit is due. Had Wayne County won I'd have said good luck and I hope to see you guys next year. But the fact is Wayne got a lot of breaks, Belfry pissed away some good opportunities but still got the trophy fair and square.
I know you aren't one of the "whiners" on here and I'm not trying to insinuate that you are, but I wanted to explain why I posted that. And for the record, I think Wayne is extremely physical, well coached and definitely on the ride in KY football. But on this day, yes, Belfry was a little more physical.
