Note 1: Graves County had 10 (TEN) different players receive AT LEAST honorable mention. Mayfield, which is in same county as Graves and served by same VOTING paper, crushed Graves County. ... Mayfield had 0 (ZERO) honorees. Not even a single honorable mention.
Note 2: Honorable mentions are listed by position and then ABC order by player's FIRST name.

DB Sani Warren of Belfry....
LHL Class of the Commonwealth (Top 22 Players)
AP 1st Team All-State DB
CJ 1st Team All-State DB
Battle of the Bluegrass All-Star Team
National Guard Border Bowl All-Star Team
Yet...
WYMT has them as "honorable mention" on their defense for the All-Mountain Team while naming him 3A POY at the same time. HAHA
... Congrats Sani! Even if your local news station is a little confused.. well earned honors! Only fitting that a kid who selflessly played 4 years who only cared about team accolades and not personal accolades is able to end up as perhaps one of the most decorated Belfry players in School History when it is said and done.

What?
This list is a joke. I don't even mean those who made it. (Congrats to those who did). The way it is put together is pathetic. 3 QB made "second" team.

Big congrats to Cody McPeek, first team all state ! Wow!

I see that most players come from newspaper cities. No floyd county boys but Chase Hall. Lol I hate that newspapers and members of the AP have watered down this system. People talk about the CJ, but block voting happens in the AP as well!
01-02-2014, 07:21 PM
AP means press selections, I know you know that. They vote on the kids they cover. You don't have a paper or sports editor to vote for your kids they will not make it. With that said , someone in Mayfield needs to fire their sports editor.
01-02-2014, 07:34 PM
The Appalachian News Express is a joke...Two Shelby Valley kids over whats in the Covered area...Must be related to the sports editor....and I'm sorry chase hall was a beast in 1A..but he wouldnt have touched the ball at Belfry....I just bought my Last Appalachian News express....

Wow, Lawson Page didn't even get honorable mention? 3200 yards passing, 600 rushing and 40 TD's this year. Not to mention nearly 8,000 yards passing, 1500 rushing and over 100 TD's for his career, plus 3 regional championships, 2 semi-state championships, and 1 state championship. That kind of QB at least deserves an honorable mention. Oh well. Congrats to all who made the team!
01-02-2014, 09:42 PM
Congratulations to Zack Caldwell and Carson Whithead. I honestly believe Caldwell has a chance to be the best OL out of Harlan County since George Massey.
01-02-2014, 10:30 PM
Congratulations to Bell County's Justin Green, Justin Warwick, Cody Griffin & Nathan Murray 2013 All State Honorable Mention!
01-02-2014, 10:59 PM
Did the 2013 version of the Mayfield Cardinals have 1st and 2nd team all staters this year? No, Did they have a few honorable mentions? Yes Did they get honorably mentioned? No
The Mayfield Messenger sucks as far as covering a game the articles were pathetic this year, Barry Danowski, who freelances for them does a hell of a job but the regular person that covers football sucks. Tell him I said it

Takes TWO votes to make honorable mention.
Only 15 people voted.
You only vote for two QBs period (one for first team, one for second team).
Who would you vote for?
- Barker (UK commit)
- Bonnafon (UofL commit)
- Hayes (never lost as a starter, IIRC)
Give me 4-5 options, sure Page makes my list (Central Hardin's Krupinski, The News-Enterprise Area Offensive Player of the Year, beat Page and McCracken's Hughes as well. He didn't make HM either).
But with only two picks, that's tough to ask a voter to pick Page over a D-1 commit (All-American Game invite Barker, Bonnafon signed with an 12-1 team) or an unbeaten player (Hayes).
Maybe Collins' BACKUP QB should have made All-State after throwing the "Pass Heard 'Round The Commonwealth."

The Newsome kid from Shelby Valley is a very good player. He has started since he was a freshman and played about 5 different positions. Some big colleges/universities have inquired about him.
