South Laurel is now open
#1
Former South Laurel head coach Matt Rhymer accepted the head coaching position at University of the Cumberlands.
#2
This really surprised me.
IDK Rhymers background to well, but I didn't think it was good enough to go to UC.

Now South is in major trouble yet again. Knowing them, Welch will be back.
#3
Did he not coach there once before as an assistant?
#4
Rhymer played there and also was an assistant coach under John Bland.

When you can recruit your own players instead of having to play with what comes to you, there are a lot of coaches in high school that can be good. Just ask Bell, Highlands, Boyle, Clay Co.BB, the list goes on and on. LOL

I thought he had a lot of ties to UC.
#6
I knew what he done at UC and that he coached there, but I never thought he done anything else. Seems like UC could have gotten better.
#7
is this confirmed? where is the source?
#8
This is on the University of the Cumberland's web site. Let the speculation begin on who South will hire.

I've heard that South Laurel is one of the largest high schools in 5A. Is that correct? There's no excuse for a 3-7 record if that's the case. The best high school coaches recruit their own school unlike any other. I was very surprised by this hire by UC.

How good of a high school job is South Laurel?
#10
Well, here we go again. Good coach and now he is gone. This is not a good football job, it could be but it would take time.
#11
Unreal. Didn't see this 1 coming. Not sure what on his resume qualified him for this job??? Cumberlands had the signs of becoming a national power but this is puzzling??

Where does SL turn now? You never know they maybe better off.
#12
He's a class act. Best wishes to him at UC!
#13
Trust me gang, Matt is a very good hire. He wasn't at SL long enough to do anything but improve the culture. He is a great Christian man and a very good coach. He was part of the culture Bland built and will continue to grow that program. Congrats Matt!!!
#14
Congrats to Coach Rhymer!
#15
The Cumberlands is my alma mater and I agree with 2 different posters somewhat. First I don't think his short time at South Laurel was enough time to tell if he is a good HS head coach or not, that place is a dumpster fire. Second his resume has nothing on it to indicate that he is the MOST qualified person to be the head coach at a school like Cumberlands.
#16
maybe because he is familiar with them and will run the same system as Bland?
#17
South will have trouble getting a good coach with a good resume behind him. With that said I'm a laurel co grad from many moons ago. I would love to see them do well in order for that to happen it will take time and a lot of hard work for it to happen. I can happen but it's not going to happen over night. Matt was on to something at south, there is talent in that school but the right coach has to get that talent out to play ball and develope in a good team.

Congrats to Matt and best of luck.....
#18
I just want to say congrats to former Harlan Countian, Mathew Rhymer!!!

He probably took one of the worst jobs in the state and made significant improvement his first year. I have know idea what kind of college coach he will make but I thought he did a great job at South.

Jealous are we?

I just think he will do a good job. South Laurel has very few football players at this time. The second comment was just a shot I like to take at those that live on recruits.

LOL I like to take shots at the 14th region for all there crying .

He is going to be a great one. I thought Harlan County should of made him the coach in waiting. I don't know what the problem is at South Laurel. I do think he was making great strides at SL. Mark it down---he will do great things. Kudos to UC for hiring him. I don't blame him, there are so much politics in public schools. Good luck Coach Rhymer!

If you think that was a bad hire just wait...lol. Rymer is a class act.
#26
I still think Harlan County should of done what ever it took to have him waiting to take over for Larkey when he leaves. He is young, Good moral Christian person, Heck of a coach, From Harlan County, and would be there for a long time. Not sure if he still has family there or not. I just think HC missed the boat on that one.

Just a side note Knox has had more recent transfers than anyone in the area and still can't win.

Hope it works out for rhymer but it do not look good.
#28
You guys just like to get me going....so...here you go. Bell stopped getting transfers, Dudley left and you lived on his recruits, and now look what has happened. Better get his recruiting coordinator back on staff, you are on your way down. The King of the Mountains, 6-4 and the future is not bright. Next year the same and then the bottom falls out. Good luck
#29
Mills to South Laurel, if he is smart.
#30
It would take some time, but this could be a solid program for this area. The right person could make it work. Rhymer did a decent job, there was too much to get done in only one year. Rome wasn't built in a day.
