Hazard 11 Estill County 1 (5 innings) (14th Region)
#1
Final from Buckhorn in 5. 14th Region Championship.

Estill County played as horrible as they could and Hazard played as good as they could.

Estill should have used the four pitchers that pitched tonight last night and Tuttle tonight.
#2
Wow!!! I seem to remember someone saying Hazard couldn't win the big one.
#3
How Bout Them Dawgs !!!
#4
Most shocking win since the South Central Louisiana State Mud Dogs won the Bourbon Bowl...
#5
Every team has a time when they run outta gas and tonight was Estill's. Hazard took advantage and Estill just couldn't get a spark back in them to keep it a game.
#6
Congrats to Coach Meehan and the Hazard Bulldogs!!!! GREAT TOURNAMENT

Hazard beat 3 good teams in 3 days. with So, Fr, So pitching.....

Congrats Bulldogs. Good Luck at State. Represent 14th Region well!! Bring the trophy to the 14th!!!

Engineers keep your heads up. nothing to be a shamed about. 24-11, 3 time district champions. One of the better teams to come through Estill in the past few years. Best of Luck to all the seniors!!!! We still have one team playing for a region championship. Let's go support the girls on their quest for another region title!!!

Strike Out King think about what you just said. If Estill doesn't pitch Tuttle last night they are home watching the finals tonight.

Not Necessarily. Withers, Sparks, French, Farmer could have pitched last night and still got past Knott even with Cornett on the mound. Withers is usually a dandy.

Hazard seemed to have wanted it more. Still nothing for Estill to hang their heads about tonight

You keep telling yourself that buddy. Lol. Tuttle struck out 18 batters and Knott booted it around all night and you win on a wild pitch in bottom of the 9th.
#11
Let me be the first to say Congrats to the Hazard Bulldogs, since I was one who said they havent been able to win the big game yet. Tonight they done it in fashion, and will represent our region the 14th as it should be. Again Congrats and go "DAWGS"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They very well could have. According to maxpreps (don't think all game stats have been entered). French 5-0, Farmer 4-1, Withers 5-3

I'm really hoping Hazard, Perry and Knott is on Estill's schedule next season. Would love to get the rivalries with Hazard and Perry renewed and get something going with KCC.
#14
Congrats Hazard!! I watched both Estill games and i agree that if Tuttle hadn't pitched last night they would have been beat by Knott. Even with him pitching they barely won on a passed ball. I will say they hit Cornett better than Hazard's pitcher today. They also had 7 or 8 errors in the field while Hazard had 1. The best team won. They had to beat Powell, Letcher, and Estill to advance to state. So props to Hazard on a job well done.

Congratulations BULLDOGS!!!!

Not bad for a team with 3 seniors, one of whom is injured and can't play, no juniors and the rest of the team is made up sophomores, freshmen and 6th, 7th & 8th graders.

Seems to be a reoccuring theme in the 14th. LCC won it with only 2 seniors last season, Powell Co. came out as a dist. runner up in '12 and rebounded to win with several underclassman including soph. Hatmaker pitching the 2nd gm, LCC in '11 with only two seniors - soph. Short pitching in all three games, and PCC - even though they started several seniors, Connor Hurt, a soph. had wins vs. Estill and Powell. This year Wells a soph., pitches a dandy to beat Powell in the opening round. Congratulations to coach Meehan on his 4th regional title as a head coach!

Congrats to Hazard. Impressive with their youth. Nice team!

After reading this thread I must agree with Ky Headhunter the Cornett/Tuttle matchup had to happen, it was the only way either team could advance. The only problem I had in the Hazard/Estill matchup was that we started a sophomore in Withers who has never had any experience in regional tournament, not don't get me wrong on this point, this young man is gonna be very good next year but when you have a team with the upperclassmen we have just don't think this was right choice at that time. Also, back to the Cornett/Tuttle matchup where else could you see pitching like that with a total of over 30 ks. Wouldn't have missed that for nothing. Great job guys, you both played like champions!
#20
^ I see ur point....

But... U have to look at Hazard also, Cumbow is Hazards 3rd pitcher behind Wells/Smith... Cumbow is also a Sophomore with no regional tournament background!

Knott and Estill both had to use their number 1's just like Hazard had to use their number 1 and number 2 just to get to the finals.

Anyways... Big S/O to Cumbow for pitching a great game!

efkk, not trying to take away anything from this young man, he pitched a great game and deserved to win, but it is tough for a team to travel 350 miles in 3 days, arrive at home 1st night at 11:30, 2nd night 1:30 and still go to school the following days and not be totally exhausted. But as we say in Estill, "Thats just Baseball".
#22
Hopefully Buckhorn will never host another regional tournament again... Just my opinion.
#23
Powell County hosts region next season
#24
I totally disagree with people not wanting Buckhorn to ever host the regional tournament again. I was at every game and the field was in as good of a condition as any in the region. There was plenty of parking and more than enough seats. And as to the comments that Estill didn't get home til 1:30 in the morning, just think if the tournament was at Letcher Central. They wouldn't have got home til around 3:00.
#25
You're dillusional if you think Buckhorn's facilities are as good as Estill, Letcher, Knott, Hazard... Buckhorn didn't have bathrooms. Only port-a-potties.
#26
Players reported some serious dips around 1st base and the outfield appeared to be sloped a lot more than necessary for just rain drainage.

Like a lot of schools, Buckhorn's real estate is limited and the've done well with what they have and a just a little work with a level and some earth moving will make it even better.
#27
The point I should have made is that since so much school was missed this year because of snow, tournaments need to be played in area of equal travel times for all teams no matter the region. If this is done, Estill/Hazard is a different game but as I said earlier "That's Just Baseball"
#28
Congrats to Hazard from 64SUR and Good season Estill County :betterthanexpected:
#29
I think if Hatmaker was still with powell this year, it could have been different. That, of course, is just an IF statement.
Hazard is young and played very well. I know many of you all will take it the wrong way, but I am just wondering how many players on Hazard are hold backs? I personally don't see a big problem with it because every player can be held back in middle school. I was just wondering.
How are the new khsaa rule going to effect baseball? I know it can be harmful to some programs when it comes to basketball? I am not positive, but I think in basketball, middle schoolers will not be able to play varsity. Only up to jv. Is that right?
#30
Hey Socrates...when did Estill get restrooms? They only use port-a-johns.
Every field has it's faults. LCC is really small. Hazard keeps moving fences in because of the rocks falling. So on and so forth. Buckhorn isn't the best, but they just need someone there that is willing to work hard and spend money on their field and it could be ok.
