Paducah Tilghman at Mayfield. Thoughts?

Don’t see ANY path that mayfield even stays close, PT probably puts a running clock on mayfield

Never thought I'd see Mf get a running clock put on them. Hope they come up with a great plan and cause the Turdnados some problems.

Mayfield is an amazingly historic program. Year in and out they produce unreal talent. But PT is on a war path this year it seems.

I watched this game with 64SUR streamed by the Red Helmet Gang. Came down to the wire. Mayfield should have won that game last year imo. Should be a dandy but edge to Paducah Tilghman this season.

I think Mayfield has a punchers chance in this game.We have great speed but not PT speed so we must contain the qb passing and with his legs.if we could get an early lead and then shorten the game with clock managemnet,we could have a chance. Our defensive ends are going to have to step up teams getting the corner on us to easy.England needs to have a big game now he has pt speed and our receovers are going to have to catch the ball.Im hoping all this haappens for the red birds.

Only way to SLOW DOWN TILGHMAN is to keep the ball away from them like Murray always tries with us, we don’t have the line to dominate the trenches so that ain’t happening.

I expect Mayfield to defend War Memorial with tenancity but this is a tough game for a inexperienced secondary & QB. Tilghman took it easy on McCracken Co, to put it mildly. Perhaps they wanted to send a message in the second game by pummeling Graves Co. I believe the entire state received it.
Mayfield's inexperience has shown with some sloppy play at times. If they don't improve on those things this week it very well could be a running clock. If I'm not mistaken, Mayfield gave up three onside kicks in the 4th quarter against Hopkinsville. How does that happen?
Anyway, I'm going to think about this some more before giving a score prediction in Tilghman's favor.

Maybe the KHSAA will drop the hammer this week and all their studs get deemed ineligible.

KHSAA won't do sh-inola about anything. They only care about revenue and trying to mimic the NCAA. Their lack of setting respectable guidelines and enforcing them is why we have all the blatant recruiting going on within several programs. Maybe if Paducah Tilghman goes on to upset Boyle Co there will be enough upheaval in Central KY to force their hand. If so, they need to include 10-15 more programs.

I'll say this too, Mayfield is not one of those 10-15 programs. It's amazing and commendable that Mayfield continues to thrive year after year with their own kids and farm system. They are by far my most respected program in the state.

Look at the twins who got eligible at Corbin. If you are a big time prospect then Stoops and Marrow are going to make sure those kids get ruled eligible to give them a better shot at landing at UK. Like it or not, it is what it is.

I'm pulling for Mayfield but have to pick PT.
09-03-2024, 03:50 PM
Tilghman has it going on this year. Mayfield is rebuilding and learning, and I expect them to keep it closer than Graves, but don’t expect them to pull this one out. If Mayfield can manage to keep the chains moving on the ground to grind away the clock then I can see them keeping to score respectable. If they struggle to do that, then it will get ugly in a hurry.

Mayfield needs to bring a different approach to defending the pass than what Graves County did at Paducah. I understand it's near impossible to play tight coverage schemes against all the speedy receivers that Paducah Tilghman puts on the field without recourse. However, playing 10 to 12 yards off the WRs clearly doesn't work. First, it allows the QB to make quick decisions with little pressure. Second, it makes for easy and/or uncontested receptions. More importantly, it immediately puts those speedy WRs in space with the ball. Something we always hear about with a desirable football offensive analysis.
Mayfield needs to shift or "encourage" the Tilghman offense into more run plays instead of the 2:1 pass to run ratio they normally trend. Nickel and dime packages playing Cover 4 man-match with your best two DBs while frequently swapping the matchups based on down and distance. Mix in some Cover 5 and even some Coverage 6 but not soft cover. Play the Cover 6 normal on the 4 side but go Cover 2-man on the 2 side, again swapping the matchups. The problem here is the inexperienced Mayfield secondary. It's a daunting task but I'd rather lose trying something with logic than to sit back and get picked apart. This may force Jack James to make some tough reads while getting deeper into his progressions. In turn, disrupting routes and timing while allowing more time for pressure from the front 3 or 4. It may also lead the Tilghman OC to call more run plays, taking what they are given.
Forcing more run plays may not equate to stopping scores for Paducah Tilghman but it will use more clock. Most everyone seems to agree Mayfield needs to shorten the game to keep it respectable or possibly hang around late.
As for the score, PT in the 35-59 range and Mayfield in the 17-31 range.
The weather forecast is good, and I'm not convinced that Mayfield can control the tempo. I'm leaning toward the higher end of the spectrum.

side notes:
- Jack James completed 35 of 43 passes for 438 yards against Graves County. Great game!! The high percentage reflects some soft coverage too.
- Paducah Tilghman might be without starting RB Demarkus Wilson (went out against Graves Co, appeared to be ankle). Micheal Hinton looked good with his 3 carries for 42 yds and most likely will see an increase in touches.
- Mayfield might be without defensive leader Ian Williams at LB (possibly injured at Hopkinsville)
- The high field crown at War Memorial often plays a factor in the passing game, especially out routes.
- In 2022, as a sophomore, Jack James completed 6 of 17 passes for 60 yards. He will look to atone. Maturity and experience are on his side this go around, along with the added talented group of WRs.

They've had my respect for more than four decades. Not a better program in my book. Corbin and Mayfield have had some dandies games over the years. Lot of good memories.

Good write up Glory Days,
This pair has matched up for a lot of years, and history would tell you that records and rankings don’t mean a whole lot when they meet.
I think PT has an edge this year, but I would never discredit Mayfields chances.
If someone had only saw the scores from the last few years they would expect the favorite to win, but for years we had many tooth and nail battles often going down to the wire.
I would just assume see us get back to that being the norm. It’s good for both programs. You don’t get better playing inferior competition.
It’s tough losing any coach, it seems we’ve done it 18 times in the last 10 years; but it’s even tougher losing a Morris.
But when the dust settles I believe it will be just fine in Mayfield. You don’t have to look that far back when Joe was questioned about his “flashy new offense”
That all seemed to work out ok-
As far as this Friday, I think it comes down to if PT sets the pace it will be trouble for the Cards. If Mayfield plays keep a way, it could make it interesting.

With this being at Mayfield, and a rivalry game, the only outcome that would surprise me would be a blowout by Mayfield. Paducah Tilghman has the better team this year. But that doesn't always matter in this type of game. I think PT jumps out early but Mayfield settles in and makes a game of it. Paducah Tilghman 35, Mayfield 20.
