CE,
Do you typically play electric or acoustic? (I started only on electric.. doing the typical skynyrd/eagles stuff that most start out on when they take that route). Now I play solely the acoustic, finger pickin country.

I personally don't like anything besides the guitar and piano. I just play the others for the challenge, and when I used to do some recording.. for fullness.

Electric. I pretty much have to. I live in an apartment, so I can easily control my volume with the electric.
An acoustic really only has about three volume levels, soft, medium, and loud. I like being able to plug a headphone jack in the amp and listening to it that way too.

I guess I should have elaborated.
My rig:
1981 G&L L-1000 Bass
Kustom (2-15") Deep End Combo - 500 Watts (technically it's rated for 700 but I don't ever get it that high)
Digitech Bass Modelling Processor
What I mess around on:
Squier Telecaster

Poor man's Fender.

Don't worry.. I always pretended my Sigma was REALLY a Martin, and that my ephiphones were Gibson's.

Right now I have an SG, and a Blueridge acoustic. The acoustic is my fave that I've ever played..... action is amazing.... sound is brilliant.....

Yeah, I just don't play guitar enough to justify getting a better guitar.

I don't think there's such thing as a 'better' guitar. Music to me, is all about how it sounds.. to ME. My BR is worth about $500 tops... but I'd take it over any Martin or Hummingbird you could ever give me...

I used to play the Saxophone

I play acoustic guitar
Got a banjo for christmas last year and took lessons for a month before the instructor had to quit. Since then I ain't had anybody to teach me nor do I know anybody who plays. Been tryin to teach myself like I did on the guitar but it's a whole nother world, lol.

Of course there's such a thing as a better guitar. You can't seriously tell me that the plastic-stringed First Act from Wal-Mart can match up with a Martin D-28.
I agree that, to a point, it's no longer about price or reputation, it's about the way it sounds. An Ovation may sound just like a Martin...but have a price tag that's $1000 cheaper. That's mainly because Martin can price to the level of their reputation and still sell guitars.
Squier's are generally built in Mexico with cheaper labor and cheaper parts. Now the sound might be close or the same in most cases to a Fender, but the Squier won't last near as long as the Fender, I know from experience. I had a Squier a few years back that had some screws holding the pick-guard on start to come out. The cable jack also became loose and needed to be re-soldered.

I found the banjo the easiest to learn... the chords are so simple... and I've always been a finger picker...

I was talking about Guitars... not Tyco. lol
Seriously... I was talking about the "Squier", and other cheaper guitars. I don't see much of a better guitar than these. Epiphone, Squier, Sigma.... ya know?
I had a peavey falcon once, and it played/sounded as good as any electric that I played with..... Its not price as much as equipment, pickups, strings, and the musician himself. Thats what I was referring to.

Yeah, the musicians him/herself has a lot to do with it too

I appreciate that Squier makes affordable guitars, but the beef I have with them is the Squier I had for a couple years. The screws started coming out of the pick-guard and the cable jack came loose and needed to be re-soldered. They just use cheaper parts and labor than Fender.
But you can get a Squier and put new pickups in it, etc. and it will sound even better than a standard Fender.

I'm sure I could tech myself some of the slower pickin stuff, but there is no way I could teach myself "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" or anything like that.
