Sheldon Clark/Prestonsburg Scrimmage
#1
Scrimmage time is 6-6:30 p.m. @ Prestonsburg.

Should be an exciting scrimmage... best of luck to both teams!
#2
I'm looking forward to seeing this one, But Sc better come out and play better then what they did against Shelby Valley Friday night.
#3
I was told by a player that it would be a 10/10 format scrimmage.

They did the same format at the Last SC scrimmage.
#5
Who plans on showing up at this scrimmage?
#6
I'll be there if anyone wants to meet up
#7
I'm just wondering how this scrimmage went??if you went to it will you please post some results...
#8
Tell us how it went... I am wanting to know!
#9
I heard it was a tie, but I'm not 100% sure. Can anyone confirm this?
#10
They played 10 minutes on offense then 10 minutes on defense then played 4 quarters i do believe. In the 10/10 session Pburg was up 3 td's to sheldon clarks 0 then the JV came in and SC scored. During the quarters i believe it was a tie.

No, SC's #7 Roger Damron got two touchdowns for the varsity with the 10 minute offense being 3-2 and they tied in the 4 quarters.

Well how did both teams look? It sounds like Sheldon Clark played a lot better then what they did against Shelby Valley.

During the 10/10 sessions, Prestonsburg scored 4 touchdowns to Sheldon Clark's 2. The two touchdowns were scored on Prestonsburg's JV defense. The JV defense held their own against Sheldon Clark's varsity offense, but when they started throwing it up to #7, the JV DB's couldn't stop him.

In the second scrimmage they had (which was game like, instead of 10/10 format), the two teams tied 2-2. Prestonsburg struggled on offense during this part of the scrimmage, and the receivers just weren't getting open. Thought we should have ran some more plays with the receivers running shorter routes instead of going deep each time. Sheldon Clark looked pretty good in the second part of the second part of the scrimmage. They moved the ball well through the air and on the ground, mostly because they're line began getting off of the ball.

If Sheldon Clark's line gets off the ball when its snapped they do pretty good but when they don't Prestonsburg was in the backfield making plays, which happened a lot. Sheldon Clark fans were not happy with that at all.

What I see wrong with Prestonsburg:

1. Too many play fakes at inappropriate times. When it's 3rd and long, no one is fooled by double fakes to the backs. All it does is take pocket setup time away from the QB.

2. NO involvement of the RB's in the passing game. The Blackcats need to be using Craynon and Setser on swing passes and screens.

3. The defensive front got pushed back far too much when Sheldon Clark kept it between the tackles. It's tough for a 4 man line to stand solid, but it MUST happen in the 4-4 and even more in the 4-3 to keep teams from getting 4-5 yards all the way down the field.

4. In zone coverage, the defensive backs are oftentimes guilty of "watching the game". In other words, the d-backs are much too slow to react to the nearest receivers.

5. Discipline was sorely lacking on the defensive front. There were 3 drawn offsides committed by the P-burg line on three plays in a row. DON'T anticipate the snap - WATCH THE BALL for the key to start !!

I agree!

But Allen Craynon didn't play much defense last night, he was injured going into the scrimmage and left the scrimmage with a pulled hamstring. Thats why you seen, junior Josh Blackburn come in.

Hope Craynon is going to be ok. What will that do to his playing time for the open game?

The team doctor said that it looks like he will be alright.

He may not be playing defense, just offense and special teams against Paintsville.

Cool..........best of luck to Craynon. I don't want anyone to get hurt. It's a great game to watch... but I know a hard game to play. What these boys go through every game... only the boys and thier parents know come Saturday morning. I wish only the Best of Health to all of "our" players.

Yeah those 2 TD's were against the Pburg JV team.

Was he the kid that got hurt during the game??
#24
SC two touchdowns was not against the jv, Roger Damron caught a long pass inside the 10 yard line, then the ball was handed off to Ryan Kelly who took it to about the one yard line, then it was handed off to Matt Slone who scored for SC. Next we headed down the other side of the field where from a pass from Austin Stepp Matt Slone scored again.

It wouldnt of been against prestonsburgs JV because the JV had a chance to play after the varsity was done...Nice excuse for you people from prestonsburg!!
#26
JV team or Varsity team, these scrimmages mean nothing. They're used for the coaches get get some reps in before the season starts.

He was running in the last Prestonsburg touchdown at the end of the scrimmage.

Not an excuse... both safeties, both corners, all three linebackers, and two linemen were on the sideline that are first string defense. So you had two varsity players in there when Sheldon Clark scored those back-to-back touchdowns.

But their is no use in arguing over a scrimmage that means nothing. Like blackcat said, these scrimmages mean nothing. Both coaching staffs were getting younger players experiance against varsity players and were trying out new formations and plays. Thats why you didn't see Prestonsburg in their primary Power-I formation at all.

Best of luck to Sheldon Clark on the season!

Go Blackcats!

What I see wrong with Sheldon Clark:

1. Offensive line lacks quickness pulling outside the tackles. Though the Cards looked strong inside, the few outside runs attempted were done so with little blocking.

2. With this being only a scrimmage, I was surprised the play calling was so conservative. This should be the time to try things "outside the box", however, the #1 team offense stayed almost exclusively with base plays/formations. Maybe it's just a different coaching philosophy, though.

3. The defensive front was a little slow in closing the inside running lanes and pursuing outside. In the reactive-style 5-2 defense Sheldon Clark runs (much like Coach Haywood's at Belfry), this is very important. Experience should improve this, though.

Good luck to the Cardinals this season !!

Yeah, it looked pretty scary when it happened. Craynon broke a tackle by pulling his leg from a grasping defender on his way to the end zone. Within 3-4 steps of the line he started a single leg hop and went down on the sideline holding above the back of his knee.

But...he started putting some weight on it without pain on the way back to the P-burg sideline. After having it checked out, he was able to walk around without favoring it.
