I've mentioned it a couple of times in this thread. I thought the defense looked much better. They played well enought to win. Tonight turnovers, some questionable play calling and particularly special teams proved to be the downfall. That and Mason County made plays when they had to.

Do you think it was the personnel changes on defense that turned things around there?

That and I saw them working on tackling this week in practice. I think with the changes that were made and the concentrated effort in practice the game results were much better.
I would like to say that if any of the players actually get on here and read any of this stuff then don't pout about it. Make it better. After all you are the ones playing the games and practicing. You have had two rough games in a row and a tough one comming up next week. Play your hearts out and stick together.

They returned to the old format this year. Russell, as the 2 seed will host the 3 seed from the opposite district Pike Central. PC may move the ball on Russell with their passing game, but the Devils should dominate. That then sets up Russell @ Belfry in Round 2.
This Raceland game is absolutely huge for Russell. Another loss and their psyche may not be in good enough shape to survive a physical war with Belfry.A win and the Devils may be able to rekindle a major spark and potentially upset the Pirates. I still worry more about Russell and their ability to match up with Belfry more than any other team in the Eastern Semi-State. I like Belfry's matchup with everyone else.

Thanks EKC. It will be nice when they get everything setteled with the districts and everything.

The only thing that I see wrong with this team is NO HEART, I don't even think Falco could help this team right now. They DO NOT play like a team, there are to many individuals on this team and I believe it may be TOO late to try and find some heart. You cannot fight among yourselves and expect to be a team.

You might want to worry about Mason County too. They are good. Their only losses to 6A Boone and Campbell Counties.
I said it before People who sell this Russell team short are jumping the gun. Their only losses. A tough hard hitting game with Mason last night. A game with Simon Kenton where one of the best RBs in the state and 3 second half fumbles did them in. And the rivalry game with Ashland. Thats three pretty good teams. Sure they do some things that make you scratch your head sometimes but they are a talented team. Even more so when Bailey is back in the lineup.
I am going to go out on a limb. Let it begin. Russell goes out and hangs one on Raceland next week.

I'll go out on the limb with you. I think Russell puts it all together next week. Sticks with the run. Utilizes the pass sparingly and continue to tackle well on defense.

Climb on up.
The positives from last night.
Russell had more first downs than Mason and won the time of possesionby a long shot. Drew Abrams ran for 128 yards.
The defense held Mason County to 9 first downs and under 200 yards of total offense.
Effort. I thought Russell and Mason both played hard the entire game. It was a hard hitting game by both teams.
The negatives. Russell shot themselves in the foot enough on special teams to give Mason County good field position most of the night.
The passing game was terrible. Held on to the ball way to long looking down field resulting in sacks and giving the defensive backs for Mason enough time to close on open recievers.
Play calling. I understand having to pass at the end but getting away from the run really cost Russell in this one. It was somewhat reminicent of the game with Mercer County a couple of years ago. This is not as much of an issue though had open recievers been hit on time.
Lets get ready for Raceland and the playoffs. Everything that went wrong last night is something that can be easily fixed.

You know from the games that i have been to this season here are some things i have noticed and personally experienced from talking to some of the players. no leadership, no heart or desire anymore, too cocky, no tackling. i don't want to sound negative but i just don't see too many GOOD things about Russell football this year. i love the red devils just as much as the next person but this year is just really disappointing for me as well as others I've spoken to. I see Russell losing to Raceland also.

I agree with alot of this. However I don't think it was the case last night. Mason County just executed better.

You can run Drew as much as you want, he still picked up positive yardage everyplay, should have kept running him and will instead of passing the ball, we only completed one pass

AJ doesn't have the time the coaches think he does. A three to four second slant and we are on the move.

Two passes were completed. 2-15 with an interception. The pressure on the QB wasn't that great last night. Two out of the three sacks were because he held on way to long looking down field instead of getting the ball to the recievers underneath. Recievers were open.

I agree. I'm miffed at why the Coaches don't see that. I will say that on almost all the pass attempts had the bad been thrown 1 to 2 seconds earlier with accuracy Russell may have been the victor.

Yes they were open. Wide open. Get rid of the darn ball.

I disagree. I think he had plenty of time to get rid of the ball. He just waited to long.

Ok, well put, but why does he roll to his left more than the right. He is right handed. Takes to long to adjust and throw. He practically has to throw while turning back to the right. Doesn't have his feet planted and throws. Guess Russell won't ever have the pass right. Maybe under a new staff. But not now.

OK, it is not for me to complain about the play calling because I am not the coach. But, I would think that after awhile they would realize that the pass plays are not working. We can run the ball down the field and when we get to the 30, they decide to pass? What is up with that?? I am not just talking about this game either. I hate to see hanging heads. It is no wonder the kids are discouraged. A lot of people have said that Russell will get it together by next Friday. Well it has been the next and the next x2. If anyone thinks this team does not have talent, they have not seen them play in the past. Going throught JFL and then to Freshman each one of these classes has made a major statement among there opponents. Is it just me that thinks this way or am I a real sore looser. Don't get me wrong, Russell is still good in there class. I guess I have higher expectations. And last but not least, Russell fans makes no noise!!! Fans and cheerleaders need to cheer for the team! Russell has one of the largest quietist crowds anywhere. Let's get behind this talented bunch of kids.
Russell fans lets get this team FIRED UP!!
