Friday night IMO is make or break in a sense for JC. If we can't take out SC pretty easily then it looks rough for the rest of the year but if we win easily it might turn out in the end. Are we a threat statewide not really but are we better than 0-3 definately. If we had a schedule more like other teams close to us then we would be 3-0 with amazing numbers and everyone would be talking about how good we are but we went out and scheduled maybe the hardest schedule in the state and everyone says it is a rebuilding year. Boyle, Miss., and Bell are all three better than us but they are also better than every other mountain team. We will be fine just give us some time. SC comes in to the nest at a perfect time for us to see if i am right.

I think JC is now realizing how big of a loss it actually was to lose Tony Burchett...

Mr.Kimball Wrote:Grimm and Blume were never really a combo together. Grimm played sparingly when Blume was a senior. What about Chase Richardson? He was at one point leading the state in rushing last season too. So far JJ Jude's stats as a sophomore, have obliterated whatever either Grimm or Blume's were at the sophomore stage. If he stays healthy and has a productive line he should easily pass whatever rushing numbers either one may have put up, and become JC's all time leading rusher.
Matney said it because it is fact. Dillon had over a 1,000 yards last season too, but he has a broken hand and has not even played the last two games. Unfortunately the offensive line is not what it has been in previous years. But make no mistake, this is the best overall backfield in JC history. Hopefully by the end of the season the O line will mature and be healthy. Last year's line was just phenominal, creating holes you could drive a coal truck through. That needs to be mentioned.
I personally think last year's backfield was the best for Johnson Central, at least in the past recent years. For a few games, they had a chance to break the state record for most rushing yards in a single game. If you need a fast halfback, use Nathan Dillon. If you need a good powerback, use Chase Richardson. While you're at it, fake a handoff and give the football to the other halfback. Now you have half of the defense running to one halfback and the other half towards the other halfback (which makes a halfback's job much easier).
I can see why Coach Matney would consider this year's backfield the best since he's been there. I'm not sure when he said that, but if it was before Nathan Dillon's injury, it would definitely make a lot of sense. You have Nathan Dillon (who could only improve from last year), J.J. Jude, J.K. Hall at quarterback who can run, and many other runningbacks that he uses (he has so many, I can't keep up with them, lol).

He is a hoss as well.

You have a point. You need a good fullback to block and sometimes even run.

Johnson Central has had some accomplished backfields in the past. I do not know what would be considered the best in school history.
Prediction:
JC 42
SC 13

To elaborate on the best backfields in school history:
1998 Josh Banks 1233 yards and Shannon Price 1038 yards
1999 Josh Banks 1411 and Casey Music 1186 yds passing
2000 4308 yds rushing, Scott Sayler 1798 yds, and Casey Music 626 passing, 412 rushing
2005 3823 yds rushing, Ron Blume 2040 yds
2006 4377 yds rushing, Shawn Grim 2697yds
2007 3564 yds rushing, Shawn Grim 1775 yds, Nathan Dillon 859 yds, Chase Richardson 772 yds, and J.K. Ratliff 1389 yds passing
2008 4207 yds, Richardson 1439 yds, Dillon 1017 yds, J.K. Hall 536 yds, Ian Welch 440 yds.
My vote goes to the 2007 backfield, although Grim coming off a more impressive season in 2006. That backfield was much more versatile and explosive as a group.

Knowing that line play is your experitise. Would you not agree that all of those teams had better/more experienced line play than this years squad?
Good information though. I must say that Grimm racked up more yards than I thought.
Thanks Blur.

The 2008 team lead the Nation in rushing with over 5,900 yards, the last 3 playoff games where never submitted to KHSSA. Richardson finished with 2,039 yards and Dillon over 1,200. Welch and Hall over 600 and Bratton plus 500.

Thanks for this info too.
I know that Jude carried the ball some last season. Do you know how many yards he had as a freshman?
Also, do you know if any of the stats from the other seasons posted by Blue Blur included stats from the post season games that were played in those years?

As far as what statistics were included and what stats weren't, I have no idea. I just used the KHSAA.org website along with the Johnson Central record books to gather the stats from the previous years. So I have no idea what games were included and what games weren't. After re-evaluating some stats, Gator is correct the 2008 stats were just through 10 games. Although the stat of 5,900 yards is astounding for a difference of 1700 yards in three games. To answer your question on J.J. Jude's yardage last season, he had 258 yards rushing through the 10 games mentioned. The 2007 stats are for 12 of 13 games. 2006 included all games and 2005 included 10 of 11 games. I presume the rest are for the full season.
I have never claimed line play to be my expertise, I'm more of a defensive mind in general. But knowing the ropes in the trenches, I will say this: Lack of experience on this years offensive line and losing the best line coach this side of the state is a big blow. Most recent four seasons I mentioned were of the Matney era and included Tony Burchett on staff. Bugs' blocking schemes have always been simple and easy to understand but never easy to defend. Combine that with the ability to make adjustments on the fly, and it was a dangerous ground game that was ready to explode at any minute.

I agree with Blue Blur, losing a guy like Bugsy is a huge lost, LC is just now getting back on track after he left. He is also a first class person which is why any player under his guidance is coming out a better person as well as a better ballplayer. I have watch several practices in which he always taught the steps on blocks which is so important! I think this will be a Great game to watch with the outcome being decided in the last QTY. I was impressed with SC as a whole, they played hard and the players lost the LC game show a lot of class. It never is good to be on the losing side, believe me I know over the past couple of years with the Dawgs, but how you handle the lost and the effort you put forth the next week, shows the character of your team. I think this one will be a dandy!
