Actually it has a lot to do with the everyone gets a trophy mentality. Weaker teams should not agree to play teams that are significantly stronger then they are. If they do then whose fault is the resulting score? Everyone knows for the most part where their teams stand... It in my opinion is the coach and the admins responsibility to put together a schedule that is not only fair to your kids but also the parents and community that support these kids. I don't ever think in high school sports that there should be an instance that you try not to score. If a school is scheduling a game for the money then the kids aren't being done right to begin with. This is why I think you play as hard as possible all the time and you beat everyone as badly as possible. As far as sportsman ship goes. If you carry the ball for a score hand the ball back to the official and then do it again. The score doesn't show sportsman ship, the players attitudes, and coach's play calling reflects sportsmanship. If you are running the belly and score a 100 then so be it... If you are running deep fly patterns and reverses then that is something completely different. Either way, if the coach schedules responsibly this isn't an issue any way. I'm a younger parent with kids that participate in sports and I make sure they know if they are beat and beat badly they have no one to blame but them selves. Thats the problem there is too much blame being put on everyone else. Kids need to man up or women up in every sport and do the work to not allow beatings to occur. I don't believe in punishing groups by telling them they can't score when they have put in the time and work to bust people in the mouth. Its my opinion that you reward hard work.
