LEXINGTON, KY. — In just its second year of existence, the South Warren High School baseball program already is making some noise on the state scene. The Spartans got a solid performance from senior pitcher Josh Bartley and scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning to beat defending champion Central Hardin 3-1 in Monday’s first round of the Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA State Tournament at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
South Warren, located in Bowling Green, opened in August 2010.
“Sometimes people don’t give us a lot of respect because we’re a second-year school,” South Warren coach Chris Gage said. “Maybe that helps us.”
The Spartans (23-13-1) extended their winning streak to 13 and will face the Woodford County-Powell County in Wednesday’s 8:30 p.m. quarterfinal.
Central Hardin (31-10), ranked No. 12 in the state, scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to tie the score at 1 before South Warren answered in the bottom half.
With two out, Bruins starter Josh Krupinski (10-2) hit two batters and walked another to load the bases. Cole Dillard then hit a slow chopper to third and reached on a throwing error that allowed Andrew Vanthournout and Jacob Vaughan to score.
Bartley (8-2) retired the Bruins in order in the seventh to seal the victory. He allowed one unearned run and three hits while striking out nine.http://saxo.highschoolsports.net/article...ce?Avis=B2
