It has been five years since Will Wolford last coached football â as an assistant with the St. Xavier High School freshman team â and he admits heâs missed it.
âItâs the most fun I could possible have,â Wolford said. âI enjoy coaching, and hopefully it relates to the players.â
Wolford will get his chance to return to the coaching ranks in the fall of 2013, as St. X named him the coach-in-waiting Tuesday during a news conference at the school.
Mike Glaser announced last month that this will be his 31st and final season as the Tigersâ head coach. He has a career record of 330-74 and has won seven state championships.
Wolford is a 1982 St. X graduate who played 13 seasons in the NFL with the Bills, Colts and Steelers. He coached youth football at Holy Trinity for several years and also was a member of the St. X coaching staff from 2005-07.
âIâve always wanted to get back into it, but I have three daughters and a wife and thereâs always been other things to think about,â Wolford said. âIf I was 38 years old I donât think I would have considered the job. At 48 years old ⦠Iâm too old to wait around for the next opportunity.â
Wolford said he will not become a faculty member at St. X and plans to keep his day job as a financial advisor for the Perrone Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Heâll also continue to be a radio analyst for Indianapolis Colts broadcasts this year but is uncertain whether heâll continue that job next year.
