High school notebook: Six-class football system helping rich get richer
#8
Possible option

-4 Classes

- 8 Regions per class - no districts.

- 7-8 teams per Region (if even distributed the vast majority would be 7 teams)

-All Teams play their Region during regular season - fixes 6-7 games on schedule.

-All teams make Region Tournament (a 3 week tournament).

-Seeding for 8 team Regions (very few) would be standard seeding.

-Seeding for 7 team Regions would be this in week one: 1 (bye), 6 vs 7 in one bracket, other bracket would be - 5 vs 2 and 3 vs 4. 2nd week 1 plays winner of 6/7 and winners of 5/2 and 3/4 play. 3rd week - Region Tournament Championship game.

- Winners of Regional Tournaments then move on to 'State Tournament'. 3 weeks - classic 8 team bracket, Blind draw all 8 for brackets and home/away or split into East and West and blind draw the 4 slots on each side.

Disadvantages:
Only 4 classes - fix: Play up the regional tournaments more.

6 week playoff system fix: go to 9 week schedule since all schools make playoffs or drop bye week.

Advantages

All teams make playoffs and have a post season. Current set is just simply stupid to leave out a very small minority of teams.

First week of playoffs is competitive. The 7 team bracket allows for 2 low seeded schools to play for a post season win. They would then play the #1 the 2nd week but hey at least they can have a shot a post season win the week before. The other side of the bracket would be competitive through out.

More competitive 'State Tournament' with 8 champions playing.

Freshness and something new each year with some level of blind draw in State Tournament.

I realize it probably has a snow-balls chance in a hot place. But the current system is just to predictable and the same patterns are forming every year.
