Louisiana officials are trying to decide what to do about a massive shopping spree by families on food stamps when a power outage lifted the caps on their spending cards.
Police were called to Walmart locations in Mansfield, La., and Springhill, La., on Saturday as shoppers cleaned out store shelves.
Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd said some customers were pushing more food than any household could store in a refrigerator and freezer.
"I saw people drag out eight to ten grocery carts," he said.
Lynd said customers were "not unruly." There were no fights or arrests made, but the scene was still chaotic, he said.
"It was definitely worse than Black Friday. It was worse than anything we had ever seen in this town," Lynd said of Springhill, which is near the border with Arkansas. "There was no food left on any of the shelves, and no meat left. The grocery part of Walmart was totally decimated."
He said one customer made about $700 in food purchases.
Lynd said that around 9 p.m. CT on Saturday, a Walmart employee made an announcement on the intercom saying that the computer system had been restored and card limits had returned. At that time, customers left shopping carts full of food in store aisles.
This event is a microcosm of the takers whole outlook on life. They are passing through this world and they will take whatever they can get with no shame or remorse. If these people cared in the least that they are mooching on those that work, they'd get a job at some point. You have to understand, these people have never been taught to question whether or not it is a good thing to be on welfare. To them being on the dole is an option, just like going on to college is an option. There is no shame in their minds. And they harbor certain resentment against rich people who they see as arrogant and selfish.
It seems that the sexual revolution of the 60's heralded a whole host of destructive behaviors destined to be acted out in the lives of folks from that generation onward. Drug and alcohol abuse have numbed the heart and soul of this land. An English band named "the Rokes" recorded a song in 1966 that appropriately enough, sums up many folks life long aspirations. It's name, "Let's Live for Today". That is certainly what the shoppers at Walmart were doing. And that is why so many today are completely comfortable running this country's economy into the ground. They care only about themselves and planning for the future is not in the cards. FTR, the vast majority of those that do vote, will always vote for a democrat.
And, we are reaping the whirlwind as the result the entitlement mentality. Most of the children born to this group are seen as a sort of unfortunate byproduct of their sexual freedom. Therefore in many cases Mom and Dad are not married so, said offspring have been deprived of good parenting and are consequently now permanent wards of the state. All that will happen if the entitlements are ever diminished, is increased violence and crime. America may have well created the very force that will wind up bringing her down, ever growing numbers of those who demand to be cared for. In the meantime we can count on the words of the song to be the norm for the immediate future; "We'll take the most from living, have pleasure while we can"
