In his previous tenure at UL he was far from making his in-state schools a recruiting focus. He would go after the top players in Jefferson County and throw his hat in the ring for the elite prospects from around the State..but when it came to the mid-level 3* guys he really didn't show them the time of day. I remember well the story of the Durham kid at Rockcastle who committed to UL and then basically couldn't even talk to a coach as they recruited over him.
Now with that said, Petrino's time at WKU has been 100% about locking in those mid-level KY guys and that has been his primary focus as a recruiter. Will this transition to UL where he has the resources to recruit nationally? I doubt it..but you never know.
The issue with Petrino is as stated his moral compass. We all know he is a habitual job jumper and has the loyalty of a common tick (he'l stick with you until he drains you dry and sees a bigger butter blood supply)... but that's the tip of the iceberg. In all the places he has left he has did it with animosity. When he left UL it was abrupt and after "secret meetings". When he left the Falcons he literally left paper messages and got the heck out of dodge. When he left Arkansas it was after a scandal and tons of lies. Now as he leaves WKU the word is he basically went radio silence on the AD for 3 or 4 days... the team who gave him a chance and not even the common courtesy to tell them what he was doing.
Petrino's potential as a coach now at UL and his upside is nothing near what it was when he first had the job. The book is out on him and bridges have been burned. Never underestimate the power of negative recruiting and you can bet every prospect he sits with will have four programs insisting that if he commits to UL in 2 years he will be playing for a coach with a whole new scheme after being left high and dry.
Petrino knows how to coach..there is absolutely no denying that. But... this is just another strike against the moral character of Petrino and UL's program.
