Class 3A District 7

1. Breathitt County (7-5): A 1-4 start in 2013 was very un-Breathitt like, but the Bobcats reeled off six straight wins to capture another district championship. Breathitt County remains the favorite with five starters back on both offense and defense.

2. Magoffin County (6-5): Scotty McCoy had a memorable first season as coach of the Hornets after taking over from his father, Chester. Magoffin earned the first home playoff game in school history and only the second winning season.

3. Morgan County (4-7): The Cougars lost a big senior class and will need big seasons from senior running back Hunter Adams and sophomore quarterback Hunter Collins to move back up in the district standings. Adams, a linebacker, and junior tackle Jared Branham are back to lead the defense.

4. Jackson County (6-5): The Generals return nine starters on offense, lead by senior halfback, Austin Hundley, senior fullback Cody Byrd, senior QB Jacob Hays, senior tackle Tanner Johnson and senior center Aaron Raider. The defense will feature Johnson at end and the linebacking trio of Hundley, Dakota Tillery and Byrd.

5. Knott Central (4-6): The four wins were the most for Knott since 1996, but four of the six losses came in the district, keeping the Patriots on the outside looking in when the playoffs arrived. With 13 seniors graduating, the Patriots will have a battle ahead of them to make it back it this year.


Preseason Favorite: Breathitt County

A second-round loss to Pike Central was a faster exit than they are accustomed to, but the Bobcats continued to rule the district and should remain there with several key players back, lead by junior halfback, James Fletcher Collins, who had 1,369 all-purpose yards last year with 17.9 yards per reception and 9.0 yards a carry. Collins could see more action at quarterback this year, alternating with senior Cory Grigsby. Senior Braxton Whitmore, who had 43 catches and nine touchdowns last year, is back at receiver. Senior Jordan Turner scored 13 times at running back, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Senior linebacker Michael Hildebrand, with 77 tackles last year, and Turner, a linebacker who added 75 tackles, are back to lead the defense.


On the way Up: Magoffin County

Building on last year's breakout season, which included the school's first home playoff game, will be the Hornets' goal this year with six starters back on both offense and defense. Senior quarterback Ryan Jenkins is a threat as both a runner and passer with 1,941 yards passing and 17 touchdowns to go with 590 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Senior Dalton Keeton is the top returning receiver with 29 catches for 590 yards and five touchdowns. Linebackers Gareth Gray, who had 125 tackles last year, and Josh Poe, who added 94 stops, are back to lead the defense.


Preseason player of the Year

James Fletcher Collins, Breathitt County, Jr., HB/S, 5-11, 170.

A tremendous all-around player, who coach Kyle Moore describes as "dynamic," Collins excels on offense, defense and special teams. He had 1,369 all-purpose yards as a runner. receiver and kick returner to help the Bobcats overcome a slow start last year and win their ninth straight district championship.
