The 2012 Mayfield Cardinals with 45 points - This Cardinal team dismantled a previously undefeated Fairview squad by a 55-8 margin in the state finals. They also defeated a 2a state runnerup Caldwell Co team by a 48-7 margin in the regular season finale. After a season opening loss on the road to a powerhouse #3 ranked 5a Warren Central 42-28, the Cardinals went on a 14 game winning streak, with no game closer than 20 points, including a 42-21 win over arch rival & 3a power Paducah Tilghman, a 38-14 win over 2a contender Murray and a 56-28 win over 5a crosstown rival Graves Co.. They outscored there playoff opposition by 28.25 points a game and ended the season with a stellar 14-1 record, scoring 691 points along the way... A very, very solid Champion indeed and deserving of #5 ranking..
And the 4th best 1a Champion of the modern era is
The 2008 Beechwood Tigers with 41 points - This Tiger team was a load to handle for anyone. They squeaked by a scrappy, hard hitting Hazard team in the finals by a score of 14-7. Despite the close score in the title game, they still had an average margin of victory in the playoffs of 30.75. The lone loss on the year was a 31-20 at the hands of 2As State runnerup NCC. During the season, the Tigers manhandled an 11-2 2A Prestonsburg team 43-14, always powerful Cov Catholic 35-21 and pitched 5 shutouts on the season, allowing less than 10 points in 10 of it's 15 games on the season. They only allowed 124 points on the season to rank as one of the better defensive teams of all the other 16 contenders... An outstanding team and very deservant of this lofty ranking..
