The 1998 Middlesboro Yellowjackets with 32 points - This Jacket team was stacked and loaded for bear and the only team on the list to rank in the upper echolon in every category. They beat you with offense, defense, special teams, field position, you name it, but, one thing for certain, they were going to beat you. This Jacket team defeated a previously undefeated and outstanding Mayfield team in the finals by a score of 27-6. The week before, they dethroned another juggernaut undefeated 2-time champion Beechwood team 29-13, so, there road to the championship was certainly not an easy one. During the season, they also defeated 2a semi-finalist Breathitt Co 46-24 in the Hays Chevy Bowl and an 11-2 2a ranked Corbin team 45-25. There lone defeat came at the hands of crosstown rival and powerhouse 3a Bell Co by a 21-18 score. In the region finals, they put up 78 points against a solid Pikeville team, who came into the game at 10-2... This was a tremendous team and very deservant to be at #2..
And the winner af the Best of the Best Challenge and #1 1a State Champion of the modern era is
The 2010 Mayfield Cardinals with 28 points - Talk about a loaded and dominant team, this was it if you ever saw one. This team had 11 of its 15 games with a running clock, meaning they led by 35 points or more. Despite playing there JV for at least 1 or 2 qtrs a game, they were still the most prolific scoring team in this era scoring 737 points on the season. They had speed and playmakers everywhere and a QB who could shred defenses to pieces with his arm and once they got a lead, they could play power football with the best of them. They defeated a solid Hazard team 47-6 in the finals and outscored there opposition by 39.75 points in the playoffs. Outside a 23-20 win over archrival Paducah Tilghman, no other team came closer than 20 points of this dynamic squad. They also pitched 3 shutouts and held 8 of the 15 opponents to under 10 points. Would have been more had they kept there varsity on the field in the 3rd and 4th quarters... There's alot of great teams on this list but it'd be extremely hard to pick one any more deservant than this bunch of Cardinals..
