Is the best defense in 1a even better this year?
#1
When I heard the coaching staff at Mayfield talking early on that our young Cardinal defense could be better this year than last, I must admit that I was pessimistic. I wanted to believe it for obvious reasons, but I did not really think it was possible.

The thing that kept coming to mind was that this was a defense that rolled through the playoffs only allowing 1 touchdown, on the starting unit. This included a shut out on the big stage in Bowling Green as well. I must admit that I was not sure this could happen.

Here we are fresh out of running the gauntlet this year and I must admit that I was wrong to question them. We have played 2 6a teams, a 5a team, 2 3a teams and a 2a power. We played these same exact teams in the same sequence last year. The results are in. Although we did lose one of the games this year, as opposed to known last year, it was still better results than could have been expected.

The 2013 edition of the Mayfield Cardinals last year through the first 6 games gave up 143 points. This is an average of 24 points per game. They did not pitch a single shut out during that stretch. The 2014 Cardinals have only allowed 69 points thus far. This is an average of 12 points per game. They also have pitched 3 shut outs.

I am very optimistic at our chances in the playoffs with this kind of defense. I am also very glad that I was wrong, for once. I would like to see about 9 more shut outs in a row. Great job Cards and keep it going.
