How did your school get their Colors & Mascot?

Granny Bear Wrote:I'm not exactly sure how Harlan County decided their colors. More than likely they were trying to stay away from all the feeder school colors that already existed. I seem to remember a questionnaire about colors and mascots, but I'm not for sure. HCS could help us out on that.

Harlan County was originally The Knights. I even have a T-shirt with Harlan County Knights on it. Some people thought that the Knight mascot was too close to the Trojan mascot of James A Cawood, so there was a meeting about that. I remember an old man getting up at that meeting and addressing everyone in the room he said, "I've been in these mountains for many years, trappin' huntin' and just lookin'. I can tell you now that I've never seen nary a Knight in these mountains. I have though, seen a lot of snakes and bears. I'd like to see Harlan County's mascot changed to the Bears, or the Coal Miners, or the rattlesnakes."

Local people can tell you that the holler where the school now sits was abundant with snakes. As a matter of fact, it is called Copperhead Holler.

But anyway, there was a vote and Da Bears it was!!!

I could see that... I bet that creek still has some Copper swimming around.
