Russell's school colors are Chicago maroon and white. Gold was added in later as a trim color but has become prominent over time.

The mascot Red Devil came about from the early part of the 20th century and the railroad workers. During the winter months as boats would travel up and down the Ohio River the fires from along the railroad yards could be seen with the railroad workers huddled around them to keep warm. In the glow of the fires it was said look at those Red Devils.

I learned that in 8th grade civics from Mr. Dave Collins. I think that is most of it. The city of Russell was almost named Rail City.
