Pikeville 1955 State Champions*
#10
The Louisville Catholic School rivalry game between the nationally ranked Trinity Shamrocks (#51 in Dallas Jackson’s HSFB100 and 2011 National Champions) and the St. Xavier Tigers will be presented by the United States Marine Corps and played on Friday, October 2 at the University of Louisville’s Papa John’s Stadium. This annual rivalry game typically draws the biggest crowds of any high school event in the country. This rivalry got its start in 1956 and the game is so ingrained in the city’s Catholic culture that families schedule events to not conflict with the game. This game is promoted by the schools as the most-attended annual regular-season high school football game in the country, typically drawing over 35,000 fans. The two all-male schools of about 1,400 students each dominate state football. Trinity has won 23 state titles; St. X claims 13, including the 1955 and ’56 poll crowns before the Kentucky High School Athletic Association implemented playoffs. Trinity leads the series 38-37-2. Going into the 2014 game, Trinity had won 7 times in a row, but the Tigers downed them 35-21 to break that streak.
