Very possible there was a split between sports writers and Lit rankings. Happened quite a bit in college ball between the AP and Coaches Poll back in the day.
1990-Colorado/ Georgia Tech
1991-Washington/Miami
1997-Nebraska/ Michigan
Heck even LSU/USC split during the BCS era. All those teams hang banners for those titles. Again I will agree the system was flawed, but why punish the team for that?
