Class AAA Semifinals: Corbin at Central
Single Wing 77 Wrote:Before 1959 there was a bowl system in ky high school football. After the regular season, teams were selected for bowl games and the champion was "declared" by the courier journal I believe. In 1955 Corbin was "declared" champion by the courier journal. Corbin also claims one in 1939. It is a more controversial one because the CJ declared someone else the champion, but I think Corbin may have had a "share" of it. I'm not sure about the 39 one, some of these older or more knowledgeable hounds may be able to fill in the gaps. Honestly, I'm curious myself.

I believe the CJ used their Litkenhouse Formula to declare a State Champion prior to 1959. (FWIW, yes it is THAT Litkenouse formula we debate about today.).

As to comparing it to College Basketball it is more comparable to the Helms Foundation Champions. UNC officially claimed theirs from 1924 until they won enough tourneys to be equal with Duke.
