Talent or not, I've seen Scroggins make some unbelievable calls a few times, gutsy calls. Time management, that I remember, he never had a problem with.

If you were at the game last night, that last series (which the game should have been tied anyways if you kick your XPs)...Anyways that last series, I think Central has 1:07 on the clock, taking over around their own 40 after the punt. They run a play, about a 4 yard run by their back...Coach calls the QB all the way across the field for the play...tick tick tick, 40 second remain! 27 seconds have run off from 1st to 2nd down. Run another play, I'm thinking it was an incomplete pass, 3rd down. QB sees an opening and runs for about 12/13 yards, runs over a Corbin kid or two and gets out of bounds himself 20 seconds or so (?) remain. I think they threw a screen then, kid runs up the sideline for maybe 5 yards, gets stopped, IN BOUNDS...tick tick tick...Maybe 10 seconds clock ticking down and an incomplete pass but #14 was open and had beat his man yet again (you can't cover him 1 on 1). 7 second remaining and a completed pass but kid fought for yards and time runs out. I'm not sure the coach was aware to use the timeout even if the kid had got down with 1 second to spare...

My point, that was horrible, with Central's scoring ability when they really are clicking, they can score in under a minute. To have only 1:07 and not show some urgency was what killed me, as a coach. To me the time was more valuable than a down. Hell, Elway the ball on one of those if you have to have your QB come to the sideline for a play. Not using your timeout is inexcusable, but even a quick spike could have saved a full 30 seconds of game time. In my estimation, the last series, Central lost right around 30 seconds of game time. Corbin coach's wouldn't have done that.

One thing, of several I'll give Corbin's staff of doing, and I give it loosely cause I would have adjusted before Corbin (lol, yeah I'm Sabanesque...). They FINALLY brought a kid over to help on #14. You don't have a corner on that team, nor maybe in 3A that can single cover him. A couple times Corbin hinted at bumping the OLB out a bit and looked like he was gonna help with the receiver, he dropped back a bit with his read steps, #14 zooms behind him on the slant, and with the separation he was able to get, every time against that corner, and he high steps into the endzone...Corbin finally said enough of that and got some help. Again, that was partial Central's mistake as well. They started putting #14 in trips, instead of a wide single, and in trips it made it too congested for #14. But when he was by himself, he was unstoppable running that slant.

Corbin coaching was maybe better prepared for this game from the start. Central's defensive coaches did a great job of adjusting at the half. Something adjusted on Corbin's O line to where the QB was better protected, but mainly it was just the fact the coach's finally decided to go to the air, more on first and 2nd down, not always 2 runs and then pass. Corbin possibly played a little "safer" defense, bringing less blitz packages, etc..Either that or Central picked it up better. Central's O line is quite a bit bigger than I've seen them in the past. I'd love to have them.

My biggest surprise, Central's D line couldn't beat, consistently, Corbin's offensive line. From what I analyzed last week, Central's D line was as good as I'd seen this year. I don't know if #52 was injured, or what, but he wasn't used on the D line last night. Kid is at least 275, with arms like fence posts. SOmething had to be going on for him to not play D...unless they just thought he'd tire out against Corbin's depth. He certainly played well on offense, pancaking kids all night.

I know on certain coverages, they were taking the corner and playing him on the outside and deep and using a DB to help jam him up in the slant. When they done that, central wouldn’t throw to him, but when we didn’t, it was all night long for #14. We couldn’t keep doing it every play though because it was making us vulnerable to the run and in the deep middle.
