couple of these comments got me thinking... we had ref tell us it was legal to "spear" someone... by this I mean.. literally, pick up the RB, lift him up to his chest, and then force/slam (basically he body slammed him) him to the ground and lay on him! He picked up him under the butt and could have easily tackled him as he is NOT a big kid at all! MAYBE 95 lbs. There was no penalty called what so ever! When they were asked about it one ref said yeah.. that's illegal and then the other walks over and say "nope, that is a clean tackle, they can do it all night long"....

sometimes calls like that one the thread is about and the one I just mentioned makes ya wonder where some of these "made up as ya go" rules come from don't it??

the correct definition of a spear would be when someone is down on the ground and you lead in with your helmet. the tackle that you just talked about IS definately a legal way to tackle. thats why there is so much emphasis on bringing the hips on tackling
