I'd let him stay. Have him become the leader of the team. Before the coaches can do anything the players have to believe in themselves. Make him become the voice that everyone listens to and responds to. The old saying goes "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." I think its wrong for anyone to bail on a team just because they aren't good. If I was in that situation I'd want to be the one that tries to make the difference and get things going back on track.
