To tell you the truth swag. It didnt take long to get it running at all. I dont pay for any software. All of the software on BGR is GPL.. Opensource. Meaning its free to use and free to change. BUt if money were time.. Then I would have alot tied up in the website. I dont want to take all the credit for getting the website to this point. Alot the BGR staff and its members have help to guide me on what the site needed.
Now BGR didnt look like this in the early stages. Plus I had a lot of problems server related. I was hosting the site on my wifes webspace.. We got so much traffic that it was exceeding her monthly bandwidth in less than 2 days. I had to upgrade to a better server. Which is the only real cost right now to keep BGR up and running. BGR will never be cluttered with unwanted popup ads. I only use the google ads to cover the web hosting cost. Now we still dont have the greatest server. We have plenty of bandwidth to spare. But its slow compared to expensive servers and the downtown is barely acceptable.
But during football season I will be moving BGR to a new server. Its gonna cost alot more.. But the increase in page views will weigh out the cost come football season.
Now my goal is to get some local adervertising on here. The money from the local advertising will all be filtered back into the site. Better servers, more features...etc..
You got to remember that BGR is less than 6 months old. While BGP has been around for 5 years now. We surpassed them long ago in traffic ranking. During the summer they are a little more steady than us. This only due to the large fanbase they built in 5 years. Im not here to drive BGP out of business. Thats not the case at all. I set this site up to give people of the mountains thier own voice. Competition is a good thing..
Like Beef said it has took 100s of hours to get it to this point. But I enjoying doing stuff for people. Its just the way I am. Even over at BGP i was always making people nicer avatars and stuff like that.
I'm not in this for the money at all. I do it for the community, love of sports.. and just to making new friends....I dont feel anyone should pay to talk. Speech suppose to be free. Hence freedom of speech. Also this site is a tremendous learning experience for me.
Now BGR has seen many many changes. Ive continually added upgrades and code to make this site what it is. I will strive to make it better and better.
If this site ever reaches a point were it brings in lots of money. I would pay the staff for thier time and efforts as well..
