#31
Belfry and Johnson Central
----------
Harlan County
Corbin
Pikeville
MBorro
-----------
Irrelevant

Of course I would like to say belfry but JC is playing good ball righ now. I believe they get the nod right now and then it will be decided on the field when JC and belfry meet. You can't throw in Pulaski they are more south central if you ask me. But even if they were in eastern ky right now I would still say JC. just my opinion.
#33
Come nov 1 we will have the answer to this. That's when JC and belfry play in what most will call one hell of a slopperknocker!!!
Both of these team are very well coach and are very talented. PC is a very good team also but I just don't think they are as good as either belfry or JC and they don't have near as good of a coach.
#34
The best team in Eastern Kentucky doesnt mean your the best team in the state and will win a state title.
Thats ALL that matters.

Since a lot are stuck on this EKY phenomenon, theres no question that Pulaski and Johnson Central are 1-2, with Belfry trailing in third.
The rest really doesnt matter.
Ive never seen so many bad teams in one year in my life.
#35
Who really cares?? No hardware is given out or available for the crown of "best team in eastern ky"...and if there was a trophy to be given you would have to travel to Log Mtn and clear out the trophy case lol:biggrin:
#36
Johnson central and Belfry the beat in mtns. This year!
21 PTA better than anyone else
#37
Johnson Central
#38
OMG' sh Pulaski is a good team, but JC and Belfry are clearly the best in EKY. I agree with a previous poster. It don't matter! We will see in Nov. DONE!
#39
Some of you guys are pretty high on a team that's has not beat anyone since the first time they Played Harlan County. I give you PC is having a good year, if they played Harlan County's schedule they would be 2-3 also. Their moms though could be the undisputed heavy champs of the world...lol.

Russell County is likely a better team than HC, and PC pounded the Lakers in the 3rd Qtr.

I agree that Pulaski is probably better than Harlan Co. But I believe that Johnson Central beats Lincoln and North with a running clock by half. IMO Johnson Central is the best team in the Mountains with Belfry second and Pulaski a not so close third.
#43
I must admit I'm a pirate fan but at this point of the season it would be Johnson central
#44
:hilarious:That's a good one!! They really know how to play their football up in Canada!:hilarious:

I am sure Jim Matney needs a few games for the next few years! Be careful for which you ask for my friend!

I would personally love to see these two have a chance to play each other. Be nice if both sides could make it happen. Maybe get JC to come down for the Ray Correll Bowl or the Don Marshall Bowl.

I'll have to go with Johnson central as by far the best in eastern ky.

In any particular year, cases can be made for different schools of Eastern KY having -the- best team.

BUT as far as a true "Friday Night Lights" type program which will year-after-year field a highly-ranked team, there's now only ONE program which does so. That program is Belfry. They have accomplished coaches, a systematic offensive and defensive style, perennially draw top flight talent from an area much larger than its school district, have a devoted alumni following, and last but not least, strong private-sector corporate backing ($$ does indeed talk).

Johnson Central is on the road to where they may be considered likewise, but haven't done it long enough for their program to be seen as Belfry's equal. Bell Co. was there, I believe, but it's yet to be seen if the Bobcats get their mojo back after their longtime coach left, and the other Bobcats of Breathitt Co. are in the same boat.

Recent history does not support your claim that Belfry is on a higher level that Johnson Central. It took JC a long time to reach Belfry's level, but they arrived a few years ago. You may make a good argument that Belfry is a better 3A team than JC is a 4A team, but you cannot argue that, regardless of class, Belfry is at the pinnacle of high school football with no peers. Belfry has a great program, but if Highlands had played in 3A the past few years, the Pirates would almost certainly have no state titles. If Highlands had played in 3A, Johnson Central would almost certainly have a state title or two to its credit.

Because of Belfry's state titles, and because of his long career, I would put Haywood at the very top of a list of great eastern Kentucky football coaches, but Jim Matney would not be far down that list. Of coaches who have not yet won a state title, I doubt that there is a better coach in the state than Matney. If Matney and JC do not break that barrier this season, then I think that they will have a great shot at a title in 2014.

Belfry has a great football program and a long tradition of strong football teams, but Johnson Central has more than held its own with Belfry over the past five years. The 2013 edition of the Belfry-JC game should be a great one.

I like Pike Central but Williamsburg beat them like a rented mule.

But you are making an arguement of what if's. Belfry would certainly have their titles. They were in AA when they won their titles. Highlands was in AAA and JC still would not have beatin Boyle during their run. To say that JC would "almost certainly" have a title or two just because they had to play Highlands is well kinda funny. What if Louisville Central didn't play in AAA the last few years, then Belfry would "almost certainly" have a few more titles. :eyeroll: Makes you roll your eyes a little doesn't it. I'm not even arguing the point of who has the best program and what not because JC most certainly belongs near the top of the list for an Eastern Ky team. But the points you make are invalid.

Titles came in 2A during the 4 Class System..not 3A.

FWIW and for the record, over the past 6 years Belfry vs. JC is even with each team winning 3 games.

For the sake of the argument crossbones makes a very good point. I firmly believe if there was no Highlands JC would have some hardware... but if you play that game then you are looking at Belfry probably having three more state titles as well (we wont include 2010 as Belfry got crushed) if you do the same thing with Louisville Central.

bigger schools - Belfry and JC
smaller schools - Hazard and Pikeville

Maybe like I said I haven't seen JC. What I did see was Pulaski in their first game of the season and Belfry their first game of the season and from what I saw that Pulaski team would have beat that Belfry team like a drum.

If by PTA you mean points, than i think you are crazy friend.
First off, Belfry already played HC and didnt beat them by 21, and I promise you Pulaski County is just as good, if not better than Belfry and even or better than JC.
