This will probably be only the second game of the season that JC will go for a running clock early if the opportunity is there. The first one was Lexington Catholic, which had the big play potential to stage a 30 point comeback. Anything can happen on a given night, but I would not rule out a running clock in JC's favor.

Trying to be objective here and I donât have any real issues with JC being favored in this game.
There is lots of data to support an Eagle victory. However, this chatter about a running clock kinda baffles me if itâs really meant as a serious belief it will happen.
I will assume this claim is simply a hootenanny for the home team and leave it at that. And, I can understand those Paintsville faithful as wanting to write a history as tradition rich as Ashlandsâ¦an admirable goal indeed.
JC is the team to beat in this District and a team which has owned the District of late. As a fan of high school football, I hope this game is tight and right down to the wire.

The question was asked if there were any comparisons between the two, and I said there is "none" because LexCath is pretty good. Pretty easy to figger that one out to me.
Oh, I'm sure that a couple of our politically correct fans can give you some hope and comfort that this game will be close and say that Ashland is good, and you have their admiration and respect.....That should be enough to get ya'll through the day....
I'll ride with the having a spine approach.

Much appreciated my friend and, like you, I sense a dumbing down in this conversational quagmire. Gotta get this day rolling though...but I will be looking forward to future nuggets of wisdom from you Bob. I'm confident you will be on point.

Last season, Baker rushed for 29 yards against JC for a full game and the Tomcats had a better passing game. JC returned nearly its entire defense from last season and most of its key players on offense. The Golden Eagles just passed for 200+ yards and four touchdowns in the first half against a Rowan County team against which Ashland struggled. Tyler Pack's foot almost guarantees that Ashland will be starting drives with bad field position on almost every offensive possession.
The potential for a running clock is there for anybody who wants to see it. Will it happen? Probably not. Ashland enjoys a bigger home field advantage than most teams. But Baker has been a non-factor during his career in games against Johnson Central so far.
Baker could rush for 200 yards next week and Ashland could still lose by a wide margin if most of his yards come after halftime. Unlike previous district games, Jim Matney will not take his foot off of the accelerator to avoid an early running clock. Baker better come ready to play two halves if Ashland is going to have any shot at winning.

Say what you truly believe, would that be like Sherman through Atlanta or Harlan County through Whitley County?

Johnson Central 1-0. Ashland pulls out of this beating just like they did against Belfry in the middle school playoffs this week.

Ashland to win will have to play its best game so far this season. JC is probably by far the best team we have or will play. The penalties and mental mistakes are going to cost us dearly if not cleaned up. Baker but more important the offense needs to play much better. Baker can't beat JC by himself. I think this game will be a War and very good game. Ashland's D is playing good ball and will keep them in it. Ashland wins 28-24. The running clock comments are ridiculous, their won't be a running clock except pre-game.

If Baker runs for under 20 yards against Johnson Central in the first half, there will be a running clock by the end of the third quarter. Johnson Central is not Greenup County.

I always make a point of following the posts concerning the Johnson Central-Ashland game. I have no ties to either school.
I have to give a special salute to Bob Seger. He calls it exactly as he sees it. His above quote is a classic and is certainly factual. Johnson Central lives in the present. Ashland lives in the past although I will admit that, from all historic accounts, Fain Grone was a fine coach and the Phipps boys were good backs in the 1930s prior to the advent of the original and classic Putnam Stadium.. That is also factual.
May the better team win.

No running clock in this one. At all. This years Ashland is not last years Ashland.
10-17-2015, 04:31 PM
Some Ashland fans seem to be under the illusion that Ashland is much improved over last year's team and that the Tomcats will play a Johnson Central team that is stuck in 2014. Ashland had a passing attack last season and they had Jake Long. The final score of that game was 42-7.
This year's Ashland team may be better than last year's team was and Baker is a year older, stronger, and more experienced, but Johnson Central is a much better team than it was a year ago. The Golden Eagles were pretty good last year but that is not the team that Ashland will be playing on Friday.

I guess until Friday that can call their "signature win" Lexington Catholic which isn't near as impressive as it would have been in previous years. I know strength of schedule means nothing, I'm not ignorant. But beating teams like Fairland OH and Harlan county to a pulp in typical Matney "run this score up" fashion doesn't impress me. I know Ashland is no Fairland, no Rowan or Greenup. Just let me hold onto this little string of hope, and maybe one day Ashland will be strong enough that their fan base including myself will have a valid argument against the 0 time state champion tradition rich state jaggurnaut that wipes the field with any opposing teams jersey. I know JC is going to win, they probably already have the trophy in their cabinet. But there is hope.........

After watching hold Greenup Co. hold Baker to 16 yards in the first half and seeing Ashland has no passing last night, this game is Johnson Central's.
