All I know is Shawn Johnson will have the comets ready to play behind alot of senior leadership that wore Russell out last year. We won but ask anyone that played the entire game. We got wore out!
West expects to be in the hunt for a District Championship and an upset over the famed Red Devils would put a big feather in their cap.
If Russell looses focus we'll have another meltdown like we did against Estill Co Oct 17th 2003.
And if you want to protect the 32 game home win streak that is on the line I suggest you stay off the internet and stay in the fieldhouse or on the practice field watching film lifting or running through plays. Just Defend the R!
Russell hasn't lost a home game since Ashland in 2003! And we don't want to have to start from ZERO again! A lot of blood sweat and tears have poured over Ivan McGlone Field trying to keep the streak alive. Since it was named after him we haven't lost on our home turf. It would be nice to head into play-offs with 36 straight home wins instead of just 1 or 2.
Man, i hate to say this but some team is going to loose on the home field whether you like it or not. Its just reality no team is unstopable. i understand that its a huge thing that we hav not lost since ashland 2003, No one looks at how many home games you have won when your heading into play-offs. its how many over all wins you have.

Lack of depth and poor conditioning will keep the devils from winning this one, I dont believe West Carter has ever beat Russell, but you cant have everyone going down with cramps every game, especially with the lack of depth and youth at the skill positions, each week Ive seen 4-5 players down with cramps,
I have to disagree about the correlation of lack of conditioning and cramps. Every early game I saw Arliss Beach play, he went down with cramps. Was he in poor condition? Also, the majority of Russell's cramping issues have come from Tyler Jones and Adam Foster. Both are in GREAT conditioning shape. Studies have shown, and I agree, that cramping usually is associated with how hard a player plays throughout the game plus the amount of water they lose. With that said, Foster and Jones cramp up alot because they play so stinking hard the entire game.
Now, are players out of shape? Probably so. But, it is not what leads to their cramping up.

And it's not how many over-all wins you have that matters.
This is Kentucky and the only thing that matters during regular season is how you do against District competition.
You could loose to Ashland, Boyd County, Greenup County, Lawrence County, Simon Kenton and Raceland and it wouldn't mean a thing if you won your District.

Seems to me that the negativity is not only coming off the kids, but also some of the fans from what I am reading. Come on guys, support, support, support. They will get it, this is week 3. Temperatures are running high, emotions running high. I don't think all they are focused on is Louisville, but think about it, everyone Expects them to get there. Those are big shoes to fill. Ivan and the coaches know what they are doing. It will all come out in the wash! Heads Up Devils, have fun and play some ball!!!!!

I believe Russell had a pretty good regional win streak started in 1981: 3A Regional Champs 1981,1982,1983,1984....................

DevilsWin Wrote:Sorry fellas, but we'll do good to win the Region this year.
Which BTW is a great accomplishment. When Russell won the Region in 2002 it was the first time since 1981 that they had won a Regional Championship.
Since then Russell has won the region 4 times easily(2002,2004,2005,2006).
This year it won't be easy.
But right now we just need to worry about West Carter.
When Russell won the Region in 2002 it was the first time since 1984 that we won the Regional Championship. Russell had just come off of a Regional Championship winning streak of 1981,1982,1983,1984, all in class 3A.

I agree Devil68, I played on 2 of those teams and you never even hear about how close we were to playing in the BIG ONE....... One win away each time...

Thanks Devilologist and Devil68 for setting me straight.
My point was that for most of the 1980's and all of the 1990's we didn't even win a regional and people shouldn't expect Russell to compete for a State title every season.
Even though I would like to see it that way.
This 2007 team reminds me alot of the 2003 team. They had what it took to win against Lloyd Memorial that year but fell apart in the 2nd half. I hope I'm wrong.
I also notice with a few exceptions this Red Devil Defense isn't hitting as hard as teams in the past.
Russell has a reputation of having a hard nosed beat you down style defense and I'm just not seeing that in the secondary.

Russell's secondary has been known as a hard hitting secondary??? please name 5 players in the last 15 years who would even be considered hard hitters, T jones is the only true hard hitter on this year's team, and honestly if u think otherwise then you have a pretty weak definition of hard hitting. Russell hasnt really been a hard hitting team since the 02 season. Of course the kids dont seem to be as big anymore, at any school, dont know what's changed but I look at teams like Ironton and some of these powerhouse schools and I think JV squad as far as size goes, Im not talking about talent with our kids, I think just all around size.

Jacob Sizemore, Kasey Clark and Josh Gross are a few that I can name off the top of my head that would certainly lay the wood to you in the secondary.

Tommy Brown, left a deep impression on alot of receivers... Derrick Timberlake at line backer, Josh Wills at Linebacker......there are some kids that hit and I dont care who you are,, you can not even argue the point about these boys.....! How could you forget these ??
