We lost in overtime in the region semi-final game where we couldn't shoot the ball into the ocean if we had tried. We really played awful that game and should have lost worse than that. East Ridge beat us at the buzzer from the ugliest shot I have ever seen. It looked like he pulled it outta his pocket! lol But anyway, East Ridge went to state that year. We could have been regional champs that year, so apparently it has been since the mid 80s.
Okay, one team in 20 years. SC should compete for the District/Region at least every other year. Im not beating on the Cards. I used to live there and played there many years ago. I just hate to see the program in the shape it is in. You cant be in a rebuilding year every year.

The main difference I have seen in the boys who play now from the boys who played when I was in school is heart and drive. I know it takes more than that to win ballgames and problems within the program can cause alot of strife, but there have been so many people say that the boys play like they don't care. In one of the games, one of the main players didn't even stand in the huddle with his team! He went and sat on the end of the bench during timeouts. The games just aren't fun to watch anymore, and I hate to say that because I have a family member on the team!
And as to the "one team in 20 years" thing, I know when my cousin Jim played they made it to region. I don't exactly remember how many times, but he graduated in 1998 so maybe you will know when it was. Also, around 1992/1993 they were in region as well. So it's been more than once. But I agree, not as much as it should be.
I just don't know what happens with our teams. When I was in middle school, we won SO many tournaments, and the year Inez didn't win, Warfield did. We got to high school, and other than my senior year, I don't think we even had a winning record. We didn't have alot of people transfer out (well none that would hurt us - other than one) so logically, we should have won in high school too. I was just at the middle school tournament this weekend, and they won, but I wonder what will happen when they get to high school. Something certainly happens, because all of our trophies are at the middle school level. Can someone explain this to me?

SC went to region in 1993, 1997, & 2004.
In 1993 they had one of if not the best teams in the region and got beat by Allen Central I think.
In 1997 they played Prestonsburg when they had Jarvis, Ortega, Sammons and were probabley the second best team in the region behind Paintsville.
In 2004 they beat a tough Belfry team in overtime the first game and lost in overtime to regional champion East Ridge in the semifinal game.

yea i agree that sc doesn't play with heart because there so much controversies on the team with them fighting and not everyone agreeing with playing time and they just aint a team but it starts with having a good leader (a coach). and build off that. but it seems that the basketball team is years behind the football and baseball team.

Oh boy. Where is this going to end?
Oh well I guess Friday night...if this happens, we can see if players are being brought up for talent or for politics.
Let the chips fall where they may, just hope for the best with this years Cardinals.
Good Luck.

If this happens it will be absolutely ridiculous, wonder what the going rate is to buy a starting position at SC is these days? I heard yesterday that Porter had left the team and was moving to live with his dad in Johnson Co. any truth to this? This team was playing pretty decent before the JC game and was 3-1 in district play, the coaching staff has destroyed any chemistry they had. It's really ashame, this group could have been pretty darn good next year.

I'm not sure there is much truth about Porter moving.

So he is still with the team, I had heard earlier in the week he was moving, wouldn't blame him much, but glad he is still there.

Of course he is still with the team. He's there and he is staying.

I am very amazed and disappointed that Roger Harless has bought into the old Martin Co. way of doing things as in his younger days he was so very against. I guess thats what it takes to coach basketball in Martin Co. and thats the reason SC has lost good coach's in the past such as Johnny Martin and Sam Sparks. Those gentlemen refused to play the political game. There is talent in Martin Co. and anyone who is familar with the area knows about the powerhouses that Inez and Warfield highschool's had before consolidation. Coach's like Russell Williamson, Johnny Williams, Billy Ray Cassady played the game different, they played to WIN. One example that the staff has done as of late that is mind blowing is to bring up a freshman to the varsity level, (won't mention any names the kid dosen't deserve to be hurt reguardless of what the staff or parents do) well anyway this freshman may someday be a excellent varsity player but he is far from ready, he struggles in most JV games, but it is a fact that his parents threw a fit and threatened to take him and their financial support to another school if he did not get to play varsity. What would one of the above mentioned coach's done in this situation? It would have been good luck but see ya. There are several other players on that JV team and players on the varsity bench who are about ready and work hard everyday that deserves a shot. What kind of message does this send them? A message that if my mother and father had more money I could play? That is a smack in the face to some of these young men just like the statement that Harless made to a group in which he said he would have a good team if he could get rid of his juniors and seniors, if that is how he feels he should cut them and not make those statements about kids who give them their heart everyday and he did make that statement it is no rumor. This team could be a decent team not a world beater but at one point they were 3-1 in district play and playing well but now with all the termoil they will prob end up 3-5 and fighting to get out of the bottom seed. I am very sorry if I offended anyone in this post and I have no dog in this fight other then I am a SCHS graduate and I played 4 years for that school and it hurts me to follow my Cards and try to support them knowing that things will never change. Cardinal juniors and seniors keep you head up and work hard, most of the true fans are behind you.
You are flat out lying! Nobody could ever get to play by threatening Roger Harless in any way. He doesn't and has never let anybody tell him what to do. You can believe Roger would hold a big grudge against any parent who would threaten him. They wouldn't dare if they ever wanted their kid to play at SCHS.

You don't know what you are talking about. Who coached in a state tournament but Roger Harless? Who has been elected state coach of the year twice but Roger Harless? Who lead SCHS to two district tournament championships in 4 years but Roger Harless? Who has personally trained 5 All-Americans, Roger Harless. Don't comment on things you don't know.

You are right. The jealousy is obvious.
