Second best in 5A, maybe, but second best in the state, no chance.

Can anyone in eastern ky explain why most of the teams live and die by the run? It seems more often than not a passing game seems to be an after thought

Still trying to make up my mind on whether to go to Fort Thomas Friday. Cov Cath has a stiff challenge ahead of them. The dream ends for the Colonels at Highlands. I don't see the holes opening for their running game this week and their passing game isn't on the same level with the Birds.
Highlands- 48
Cov Cath- 20
Highlands- 48
Cov Cath- 20

Good analysis. Still, it may be worth the trip just in case CovCath plays them close and has a chance to win. Personally, I would like to see Trinity play because I believe they may be the best high school team to ever play for a Kentucky high school. I believe Trinity would play at Scott County at Georgetown next week if they beat St. Xavier. That is a fairly short drive and may be worth it. Of course, Trinity may be as good or better next year.
As for Friday's game, it may be worth the time and gasoline to go.

This is my opinion about that. A team has to run the ball a lot to get to the point where they can run the ball. I do agree the pass is what loosens things up and has a tendency to get people out of the box to allow better success for the run. A good passing game seems to get a defense back on their heels because the threat of a pass reception and, the run after, is such a game changer and seems to weigh heavy on the minds of the defense.
The passing threat by itself is not enough to win consistently against the better teams. When a defense has to honor the run and the pass they are forced to play a little looser and that softens them across the board, and that gets magnified when facing a team that can spread the field. Eastern Kentucky does seem to be behind, in that most schools rarely pass. Can't explain that one but it does seem to be the case. OLD SCHOOL?

Old school.....ha. as good an answer as I have seen. It just seems offenses that have a multiple look tend to throw these teams off quite a bit. As mentioned before scheduling opponents that typically have this could benefit these teams a lot.

I think lots of the coachs in the Mountains learned to coach the game when runnin the ball was how you won. Running the football is what has put JCHS on the map. Plus size and power are easier to come by than speed in the Mountains.

People in this area are quick to forget how different the talent level from different regions of the state.... Our best team in this area didnt come close to Highlands or Cov Cath.... Nothing to be ashamed in that, but you could tell in the local papers, that many believed Ashland had a chance. Not saying they didn't, but reality sets in, and if the game would have been at Cov Cath, the score might have been 60-8... Cov Cath, a great physical team

Covington catholic has a good team this year. Hopefully they are back on the scene for good.

No, can't go there with ya. If Ashland had put up 7 on their first drive, and I will always say the Cov Cath coaches thought it was going to happen, it would have been a different ball game. Not saying Ashland should have won the game but it would have likely been much more competitive worst case.
Ashland's defense played pretty well in the first half and went in down two TDs. It's no stretch of the imagination to say Ashland should have had at least one TD in the first half or even two. Total offense for Cov Cath was 338, total offense for Ashland was 313. That's only a 25 yard advantage for CC, which could be had in one play. Big plays did hurt the Cats but, I don't agree about not coming close. By the way, home advantage no doubt helped but the crew was out of Lexington.
Having players that go only one way is for sure a big factor but don't forget last year, in the JC and Highlands game how whisker close that affair was and JC had a LOT of two way players. I give Cov Cath the edge because of their line play. We got handled on a number of plays up front, that was the difference in the game, and created those long plays for Gray. On the other side of the ball not being able to put up a meaningful rushing threat was a total game changer for Ashland too. We did have 159 yards on the ground but 117 of that was the QB, leaving only 42 yards to spread among 3 backs. I thought Cov Cath was very well prepared for Ashland and took away some of the things we have been able to do all year.

Catholics defense was incredible looked like they had 15 players out there. Haven't seen highlands but can't imagine them being able to blow catholic out let alone beating them.
Now can you imagine it? Other teams keep calling HHS fans arrogant and classless, maybe they just know a little about KY football since their predictions are pretty accurate.
